Student answer (Band 6.5)

In this day and age, age plays a vital role in making choices in life. Individuals likely alter their habits and opinions as they grow older. I concur with the former statement because people gain experience and knowledge with age and explore the world.

To commence with, people switch their habits and judgements as they grow older because they learn various things and gain experience. As a person gains experience in life by going to school and seeing various people outside his home, he learns to understand various individuals and things. He learns to deal with situations and solve problems for himself. This changes his point of view of life and changes him as a person. Consequently, his habits and opinions change with his growing mind. For instance, a child used to walk only with support, but as he grows older and sees people doing things on their own, he learns to walk by himself and also prefers to complete his tasks on his own. Hence, knowledge and experience in life change an individual's preferences.

Furthermore, a person changes their routine and point of view when they travel to diverse places in the world. When a person visits various destinations, they meet different people, and their culture influences them. Following this, individuals change their daily habits. For example, immigrants who move to a different nation change their habits of drinking tea and start drinking coffee instead. Therefore, travelling to another country can change a person's choices.

In a nutshell, since people gain knowledge and experience of things as they get old and travel to other places in the world, it changes their mindset and their view of seeing things. So, they keep switching their habits and opinions as they grow.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear from the introduction: you agree that habits and opinions change with age, and the conclusion returns to this view. Both reasons—gaining experience and encountering other cultures—are relevant, and the examples help illustrate them. This meets the task well overall. However, the two ideas are not developed equally: the first paragraph explains learning and independence, but the example of a child learning to walk mainly shows physical development rather than a change in habits or opinions. The claim that immigrants switch from tea to coffee is also quite general and would be stronger with a more specific explanation. Develop each example to show more directly how an older person’s experience changes a belief or routine.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure, with an introduction, two body paragraphs presenting separate reasons, and a conclusion. The progression from experience to travel is easy to follow, and linking expressions such as “Furthermore,” “For instance,” and “Consequently” help signal relationships between ideas. This shows sound organisation, though some cohesion is mechanical because several sentences repeat the same cause-and-effect pattern, particularly “This changes…” and “Consequently… change.” References such as “Following this” are not fully precise, and the final sentence largely repeats the introduction rather than drawing the two arguments together. Use a wider range of transitions and clearer references, and make the conclusion synthesise the reasons rather than restating them.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “gain experience,” “point of view,” “influences,” and “mindset.” There are also attempts at less common or formal expressions, such as “diverse places” and “concur,” although some choices are unnatural or imprecise in context. For example, “age plays a vital role in making choices” is broad, while “grow old” in the conclusion sounds less natural than “get older.” Repetition of “change,” “various,” and “people” also limits flexibility. Aim for more precise collocations and vary repeated words; for instance, describe how experience “shapes” attitudes or how routines “adapt” to a new environment. These refinements would make the vocabulary more natural and exact.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including subordinate clauses beginning “because,” “as,” and “when.” Most sentences communicate their meaning clearly, and the conditional-style example about travel is understandable. Some grammatical choices are less controlled, however. In “a child used to walk only with support,” the tense is awkward for a general example; “a child may initially need support to walk” would be clearer. The sentence “since people gain knowledge … and travel …, it changes their mindset” also has an unclear subject: the plural reasons do not agree naturally with “it.” There is some inconsistency between singular “a person” and later “their,” though singular “they” is acceptable when used consistently. Check tense, agreement, and sentence references during revision.
