Student answer (Band 6.0)

Some people believe that habits and opinions remain consistent throughout the life, however, in my opinion, they change with the passage of time. Therefore, I agree with the statement that both habits and opinions change with age.

To begin with, habits are developed from a very young age but most of the time, people tend to change them for multiple reasons. A person at an age of 10 years has different habits than at an age of 20 years. This happens because of his exposure to new surroundings and to people from a variety of backgrounds. For instance, a child living with his parents is mostly relying on them for his basic needs, such as, foods etc but the same child, when grows up and moves abroad to pursue higher studies, faces new challenges and tries to change his habits to become self-sufficient. Hence, a common trend observed in many people.

Secondly, with time, not only habits but also opinions changes. With the exception of few, it is not possible for a person to carry the same set of opinions throughout his life. This happens because of self awareness and self development. People want to improve their lifestyle and the way they percieve things, leading to a change in their opinions. For example, some parents used to think that vaccination is not safe for their babies, but with different awareness programmes, their opinions changed. Currently, most of the parents are in favour of vaccinated their young one's unlike before. Therefore, a change in circumstances can surely bring a change in opinions of people.

In conclusion, I agree with the statement that people can change both their habits and opinions as they get older mainly due to enhanced exposure and self awareness.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear from the introduction—“I agree”—and remains consistent in the conclusion. You address both habits and opinions, with relevant explanations and examples: moving abroad is used to show how circumstances can alter habits, while changing views on vaccination illustrates shifts in opinion. This gives the response a solid, relevant foundation. However, the development is uneven: the habits example explains the change in some detail, whereas the opinions paragraph relies on a broad claim about awareness programmes and parents without showing how age itself contributes to the change. To strengthen the response, explain more explicitly how accumulated experience or maturity leads to each change, and develop the examples with a specific, plausible detail rather than generalising about “most” parents.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay has a clear overall structure: an introduction, two body paragraphs addressing the two parts of the topic, and a conclusion that restates your view. Sequencing phrases such as “To begin with,” “Secondly,” and “In conclusion” help readers follow the argument. The progression within paragraphs is generally understandable, but some links feel mechanical, and a few references are not fully clear. For example, “Hence, a common trend observed in many people” is a sentence fragment and does not clearly connect the example to the claim. The repeated use of “This happens because” also makes the development formulaic. Use more varied links between cause, example, and result, and ensure each concluding sentence forms a complete, clearly connected thought.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including “self-sufficient,” “self awareness,” “exposure,” and “circumstances.” These choices show an attempt to express causes and changes beyond very basic language. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, which limits precision: “throughout the life,” “foods,” “a change in circumstances can surely bring a change,” and “in favour of vaccinated” do not sound natural in context. There are also spelling or form issues, such as “percieve” and “young one's.” Aim for more accurate everyday collocations and check spelling and word forms carefully. More precise phrasing would make the examples clearer and help you express the argument with greater flexibility.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including clauses with “because,” “when,” and “but,” and the overall meaning is usually clear. Some sentence patterns are handled successfully, such as the explanation that people encounter new surroundings and people from varied backgrounds. However, errors in agreement, verb forms, articles, and sentence completeness remain noticeable. Examples include “opinions changes” instead of “opinions change,” “when grows up” instead of “when he grows up,” and the fragment “Hence, a common trend observed in many people.” The vaccination sentence also has faulty grammatical forms in “parents are in favour of vaccinated their young one's.” Review subject–verb agreement and verb patterns after prepositions, and check that every sentence has a complete main clause.
