IELTS Writing Task 2 question
It is very common for people to change both their habits and their opinions as they get older.
Do you agree or disagree?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
I cannot agree more on the fact that as we grow older we change our habits and opinions.
Firstly, our habits keep on changing based on the feedback we receive from the society. For example, in the early childhood days we all are quite loud and aggressive and we openly express our opinions towards others but as we grow older, we become more peaceful and we try to avoid unnecessay conversations and arguments. From my personal experience, I have seen my father become less social over the years. He was a person who used to interact with everyone to know about their well being in life and used to organise many social events where people could interact and discuss about their day to day problems. However, now he rather spends more time in solitary and loves his own company.
Furthermore, as we grow our opinions become less political and get evolved. For instance, I myself have started using public transportation where at some point of time in my adulthood used complaint and crib about well-being of the system and always would prefer to use my own personal vehicle. The things change over the time as we make more mature and factual decisions. Our decisions become more practical and logical as we grow.
In conlusion, we all agree at some point of time in life we all human-beings change our habits and opinions.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
Your position is clear from the opening—“I cannot agree more”—and you give relevant reasons and personal examples, including your father becoming less social and your own change in transport choices. This addresses the question, but the two examples are not developed equally: the first includes background detail, while the point about your opinions becoming “less political” is not clearly explained or illustrated. The conclusion repeats the general view rather than drawing together the reasons. The response is also 18 words below the required minimum, so there is limited space to explain how age, experience, or changing responsibilities lead to these changes. Develop the second reason and add a specific example to make the argument more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, two body paragraphs signposted by “Firstly” and “Furthermore,” and a conclusion. The examples generally follow the ideas they are intended to support, and linking phrases such as “For example” and “From my personal experience” help guide the reader. This gives the essay a coherent progression. To move further, make the relationship between claims and examples more explicit: the father’s reduced social activity illustrates a change in habit, but its connection to feedback from society is not shown. The second paragraph also shifts from opinions to public transport without fully explaining the link. A more purposeful conclusion and clearer transitions between each claim and its evidence would strengthen cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use a reasonable range of topic-related vocabulary, including “solitary,” “practical,” “logical,” and “personal vehicle,” and the meaning is generally clear. However, several word-choice and collocation problems reduce precision: “opinions become less political and get evolved” does not express the intended idea naturally, while “spends more time in solitary” and “complaint and crib” are also awkward. There are spelling errors in “unnecessay” and “conlusion,” and some phrases, such as “well-being of the system,” are imprecise in context. Aim for more natural combinations and check spelling carefully. More precise vocabulary for changes in outlook and behaviour would help you express your ideas with greater flexibility.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses beginning with “as,” “where,” and “but,” and most of the message remains understandable. Some grammatical errors are present, particularly in longer sentences. For example, “at some point of time in my adulthood used complaint” is missing a clear subject and has an incorrect verb form; “we all are quite loud” and “as we make more mature and factual decisions” also show problems with word order or sentence construction. There are also inconsistencies in tense and agreement, such as “we all agree” in the conclusion after discussing changes over time. Review sentence structure and verb forms, and proofread longer sentences to ensure each clause has a clear subject and correctly formed verb.
