IELTS Writing Task 2 question
It is very common for people to change both their habits and their opinions as they get older.
Do you agree or disagree?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
There is no doubt that people tend to change their thoughts and habits as they become older. I totally agree with this as I believe that individuals get mature with time and the life-experiences also play vital role in this change.
One of the prominent reason behind this change is maturity. People commit mistakes and learn from them.Subesequently, they became aware about the outcomes of their habits and they change it after realising their disadvantages.Furthermore, their school of thoughts also modify when they converse with distinct people and get different perspective on the same topic. For instance, migrants are likely to change their opinions when they meet people from different culture.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
Your position is clear from the opening: “I totally agree,” and you give relevant reasons, including maturity, learning from mistakes, and meeting people with different perspectives. The migrant example also relates to changing opinions. However, the response addresses the task only minimally: it does not explain these points in enough detail, and it says little about how habits change specifically. The required minimum of 250 words is not met; at 110 words, the response is 140 words short. Develop each reason with explanation and a specific example, and add a conclusion that restates your view. This would make your response more complete and better supported.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction states your view, a body paragraph gives reasons, and “For instance” introduces an example. This helps the reader follow the basic line of argument. However, the ideas are compressed into one body paragraph, so the discussion does not progress through clearly separated stages or reach a concluding summary. Some links are also mechanical, particularly the repeated use of “and” to connect several points. Organise the reasons into separate paragraphs, use clear references to connect each example to its point, and add a conclusion. This would create a more sustained progression while preserving the clear overall direction already present.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use some topic-relevant vocabulary, including “maturity,” “life-experiences,” “outcomes,” and “perspective,” which helps communicate your ideas about change. There are also attempts at less common expressions, such as “prominent reason” and “school of thoughts.” However, several choices or forms are inaccurate or unnatural, including “get mature,” “play vital role,” and “aware about”; these reduce the precision of the message. “Distinct people” and “different culture” are also not the most natural choices in context. Aim for accurate collocations and check spelling and word forms. A broader, more precise range would help you explain the reasons and examples without relying on general wording.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You show some ability to form both simple and more complex sentences. For example, “I totally agree with this as I believe…” combines your position with a reason, and “when they meet people from different culture” uses a subordinate clause. However, errors in sentence construction and grammatical forms occur in several places: “One of the prominent reason” needs plural agreement, and “they became aware” does not maintain the intended present-tense pattern. The long body sentence also needs clearer punctuation and separation of ideas. Practise checking subject–verb agreement, articles, plurals, and consistent tense, and vary sentence boundaries so that complex ideas remain easy to follow.
