Student answer (Band 6.5)

Many people believe that habits and decisions are naturally influenced by age, as people get older, their habits and perspectives tend to differ from those of their younger selves. This essay will elaborate on this statement with some examples.

To begin with, when someone gets older, their life experiences provide them with a basis for making decisions, which eventually offer positive results. Moreover, their routines and likes also change according to their faith and what's best for them. For instance, my grandmother used to have a normal meal with us, but now she is taking only baked food that is healthy for her body as she gets older, so unhealthy or fried stuff can land her in the hospital, which she is very aware of. But some years ago, the scenario was totally different from that of now. Now she knows what's good for her, and she never compromises with the things which can affect her health.

In addition to this, age has psychological effects on our decisions as well.It is also seen, that older people make better decisions compared to younger individuals. As life experiences and learning from past mistakes make a person better at resolution. This is the reason people start having different views than that of they were having in their past. For example, When i was in teenage, i was always looking for a quick outcome which can help me in that particular situation, but now, whenever i have to make a decision i analyse everything, and forecast the outcome before reaching any conclusion.

In overall, it is undeniable that, age has significant effect on our mental abilities resuting in changes in our daily routine, our like-deslikes and overall perspective as well.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

Your position is clear: you agree that people’s habits and opinions change with age, and both body paragraphs give relevant support. The grandmother’s shift towards baked food illustrates changing habits, while your reflection on moving from seeking quick outcomes to analysing consequences addresses changing opinions and decision-making. These examples extend the main points, so the response addresses the task effectively. To strengthen the development further, explain more explicitly how experience causes the changes, rather than relying on broad claims such as older people making “better decisions.” The opening says the essay will elaborate, but a more direct statement of agreement would make your position even clearer from the outset. Overall, the ideas are relevant and supported, though some generalisations could be qualified.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, two body paragraphs with separate examples, and a concluding summary. The progression from physical habits to decision-making is logical, and signposts such as “To begin with” and “In addition to this” help readers follow the argument. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent arrangement and shows some control of progression. However, cohesion is not consistently smooth: “This is the reason” repeats the preceding explanation, and the transition from the general claim about older people to your personal example could be more explicit. Some linking phrases feel formulaic, while punctuation around “as well. It” interrupts the flow. Use fewer stock transitions and connect each example directly to the point it supports.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range to discuss ageing, habits and judgement, including phrases such as “life experiences,” “perspectives,” “forecast the outcome” and “compromises.” These choices make the main ideas understandable, and you attempt some less common expressions. At times, however, word choice or collocation is imprecise: “a normal meal,” “positive results,” “better at resolution,” and “like-deslikes” do not express the intended meanings naturally. “Faith” is also unclear in the context of changing routines. Spelling slips such as “resuting” and inconsistent forms such as “i” reduce accuracy. Aim for precise, natural combinations—for example, “make sounder decisions” rather than “better at resolution”—and proofread spelling and word forms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex structures, including clauses with “when,” “which” and “as,” and most of the argument remains understandable. However, errors in sentence boundaries, tense and clause construction are noticeable. In “as people get older, their habits and perspectives tend to differ,” the opening creates a comma splice with the preceding clause; separate the sentences or use a conjunction. “As life experiences and learning from past mistakes make a person better at resolution” is a fragment, and “than that of they were having” is not a well-formed comparison. There are also punctuation and capitalisation slips, such as “as well. It” and “When i.” Practise checking each sentence for a complete main clause and consistent tense, while retaining your attempts at complex sentences.
