Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir,
I am writing the letter regarding the city garden situated in Perth, right next to my house. I am a daily walker here. Well, I wanted to let you know regarding the litter that has been increasing in recent days.
To be honost, I have a habit of walking so I use this gardan as its convenient for me due to its location. The path is good for jogging as well with the fresh breezy air. The cafe is open 24/7 , so whenever I ran out of my water , I can buy it from it. Moreover, the cafe has a variety of food, which people enjoy. I once tasted a club sandwich, which tasted so fresh.
I wanted to inform you that the litter all around the track and alongside the cafe as well. There is a single trash can, located right in front of the door, and it's always empty as people through the litter on the track or where they sit and eat. Nobody takes it with them or put it in the trash can.
It would be great to have a garbage bin at every other spot to keep the area clean. This will not only improve waste management but will also allow more people to visit the gardan and can breath fresh air.
Looking forward to have a good response.
Kind regards,
SSNAM

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You address all three points: you explain that the garden is close to home and convenient for walking, describe litter on the track and near the café, and recommend adding more bins. The examples of the café and the sandwich make the setting specific, although they take space away from explaining why the countryside walk itself is enjoyable. The litter problem is clear, but the claim that people leave rubbish because the only bin is “always empty” is not fully explained. Your proposed solution is relevant, but you could develop it by suggesting who should install or maintain the bins, or how walkers could be encouraged to use them. Overall, the main purpose is clear, though some points are more fully addressed than others.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The letter has a clear overall sequence: you introduce the location and concern, describe your walks, explain the litter problem, and then offer a solution. Paragraphing helps distinguish these stages, and linking expressions such as “Moreover” and “This will not only” show attempts to connect ideas. However, the second paragraph includes several details about the café that interrupt the focus on walking, and the transition from the café to the litter could be smoother. Some references are also unclear, as in “buy it from it,” where the reader has to infer that “it” means the café. Keep each paragraph centred on one task point and use clearer references to make the progression more natural.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use enough vocabulary to communicate the setting and problem, including “track,” “trash can,” “waste management,” and “fresh breezy air.” There are also attempts at more specific expressions, such as “a variety of food.” However, several spelling and word-choice errors reduce precision: “honost,” “gardan,” and “through” appear where “honest,” “garden,” and “throw” are intended. Some phrasing is also unnatural or repetitive, particularly “regarding” used twice near the beginning and “the litter all around the track.” Choose more natural collocations and check spelling carefully. A broader range of precise terms for rubbish and its effects would make the complaint more effective and formal.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You use both simple sentences and some longer structures, including the relative clause “which people enjoy” and the conditional result in “This will not only improve waste management.” The main message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors occur. For example, “I wanted to inform you that the litter all around the track” needs a verb, such as “there is litter”; “people through the litter” should be “people throw litter”; and “Nobody takes it with them or put it” needs parallel verb forms (“takes … or puts”). There are also tense and article issues in “whenever I ran out of my water, I can buy it.” Review verb agreement and keep tense choices consistent, while continuing to use varied sentence forms.
