IELTS Writing Task 1 question
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear sir,
I am writing this letter in regard to my recent stay at your hotel in Vancouver on August 11th and 12th. I was in the city for a work trip and reserved your hotel because of its five star reviews but, it was highly dissatisfying. The unorganised parking lot and neglegence in room service was very uncomforting.
Although i was mostly away for the day, midnight room services were not regular. I tried calling them a couple of times but they were left unanswered. Furthermore, parking space had lack of organisation. The whole area was occupied with staff parking. It was a difficult task to achieve and I had to walk miles before reaching for elevator to my room.
As one of the top rated guests, I would suggest a on-field training for all the employees and staff. More supervision and better management can avoid such experiences and I would also appreciate a discount for my next stay in the hotel.
Looking forward to hear from you.
Yours sincerely,
Mandeep

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
You have addressed all parts of the task by identifying the purpose of the letter, describing the problems encountered, and suggesting solutions. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal complaint. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the phrase 'difficult task to achieve' is vague and does not clearly explain the impact of the parking situation. To reach a higher band, ensure that your descriptions of the problems are more specific and that your suggestions for improvement are more clearly linked to the issues raised. Overall, the response is relevant and covers the necessary requirements of the prompt.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, with an introduction, body paragraphs for the issues, and a concluding suggestion. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore' and 'Although' to link ideas. However, the flow between sentences is occasionally mechanical. For example, the transition between the parking issue and the suggestion for staff training could be smoother. Referencing is generally clear, but the connection between the 'top rated guest' claim and the suggestion for training feels slightly abrupt. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring smoother transitions would enhance the overall coherence.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'dissatisfying', 'negligence', and 'supervision'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'difficult task to achieve' (which is not a natural way to describe a parking struggle) and 'on-field training' (which is less common than 'on-the-job training'). Additionally, there are minor spelling errors like 'unorganised' and 'neglegence'. While these do not impede communication, they prevent the response from reaching a higher band. Expanding your range of topic-specific collocations would be beneficial.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as the opening complex sentence and the use of 'although'. There are several grammatical errors, including 'Looking forward to hear from you' (should be 'hearing'), 'parking space had lack of organisation' (missing an article), and 'reaching for elevator' (should be 'the elevator'). Furthermore, there are punctuation and capitalization issues, such as the lowercase 'i' and the comma splice in the first paragraph. While these errors are noticeable, they do not prevent the reader from understanding your message. Increasing the accuracy of your complex structures will help improve your score.
