IELTS Writing Task 1 question

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Love,

How are you? I hope you are doing well and I am also fine. I am wrting to thank you for agreeing to look after my house as I am going for vacation with my family. You can collect the keys of my home from the watchman of my locality.

You can use the equipment of my house easily. As there is an electric gas in the kitchen which is too easy . Also, heating and the air-conditioning system are too convienent to use .

My hometown is such a beautiful town where there are lot of places to visit such as religious places like gurudwaras, temples and so on. There is a big park at the behind of my house for exercise or you can spend quality of time to enjoy the nature. and a supermarket from where you can grocery and other necessary items.

I hope you enjoy your stay at my home.

Best wishes,

Jashan

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The letter addresses the main requirements of the task, such as thanking the recipient and providing information about the house and local area. However, the tone is slightly inconsistent; while it is a personal letter, the inclusion of a paragraph describing the hometown feels somewhat irrelevant to the prompt of looking after a house. The instructions regarding the house are clear, but the development of ideas is basic. To improve, ensure that all information provided is directly relevant to the purpose of the letter, such as providing more specific instructions on house maintenance or emergency contacts.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the progression of ideas. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Also' and 'as well as', though some transitions feel a bit mechanical. The referencing is generally clear, although the connection between the house description and the hometown description is weak, making the flow feel slightly disjointed. Improving the use of linking words to connect sentences more naturally would enhance the overall coherence of the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks variety and precision. Phrases like 'look after my house' and 'enjoy your stay' are functional but basic. There are some awkward collocations, such as 'electric gas' (which is unclear) and 'spend quality of time'. Spelling errors, such as 'wrting' and 'convienent', are present. To reach a higher band, you should aim to use more precise vocabulary related to household appliances and local amenities, and pay closer attention to spelling and word choice accuracy.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The letter uses a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'collect the keys... from the watchman of my locality' (a bit unnatural), 'at the behind of my house' (incorrect prepositional phrase), and 'from where you can grocery' (missing verb). While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding the message, they occur frequently enough to impact the overall fluency. Focusing on correct preposition usage and ensuring verbs are included in all clauses will improve your accuracy.
