IELTS Writing Task 1 question

Student answer (Band 6.5)

You recently attended a short course at a local training centre. Although you enjoyed the course, you were dissatisfied with some aspects of the facilities.

Write a letter to the manager of the training centre. In your letter:

explain which course you attended and what you liked about it

describe the problems you experienced with the facilities

suggest what the manager could do to improve them

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to express with my dissatisfaction with some aspects, such as the training hall being very noisy, of the facilities, while attending a short course at your traning centre in Lismore on 10 September 2026.

I had attended First Aid course from 12:00 PM to 3:00 PM at your Learning Institute located in Lismore CBD. It was a requirement of my university course. I particularly liked the welcoming approach, friendly behaviour, and polietness of the staff. I would like to thank Mrs Lewis, the receptionist, who was very kind and she assited me to fill up the required documents. Additionally, the way the course was explained was easier to understand and we were given enough time to clear any doubts, which was helpful.

However, it was a very large group, who were attending this course. As a result, it was often noisy and made me hard to concentrate as my seat was at the back of the room. Moreover, there was not enough time given to practice. The course duration was too short due to which everyone did not get their turn to practically show the things they learnt.

Therefore, I would like to suggest to reduce the number of students in a batch so that it will help to solve both problems. It will eventually lead to a quiter class , improve the understanding, and get enough time to do the practicals.

Thank you very much for your assistance.

Yours faithfully,

Binita Paswan

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The candidate successfully covers all bullet points of the task instructions. The letter explains which course was attended (First Aid) and highlights what was liked, such as the friendly and polite staff, especially receptionist Mrs Lewis. The problems experienced with the facilities are clearly described, focusing on the large group size, noise level, and poor seat positioning at the back. Finally, actionable suggestions are provided for the manager, proposing to reduce batch sizes to improve concentration, understanding, and practical participation. The tone is appropriate for a formal complaint letter, and the purpose is clear from the outset. Ideas are well-extended and supported throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter exhibits a clear logical organisation and progression. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, positive feedback, facility issues, and suggestions. Cohesive devices such as 'Additionally', 'However', 'As a result', and 'Moreover' are utilised to connect ideas smoothly, though referencing in sentences like 'It was a very large group, who were attending this course' is slightly awkward. Overall, the structural progression guides the reader naturally from the opening context to the final concluding remarks.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey meaning with some precision and flexibility. Phrases like 'welcoming approach', 'clear any doubts', and 'practical participation' show an ability to use appropriate collocations. There are a few spelling and word-choice errors, such as 'polietness' instead of politeness, 'assited' instead of assisted, 'traning' instead of training, and 'quiter' instead of quieter. However, these minor lexical inaccuracies do not impede communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'Additionally, the way the course was explained was easier to understand and we were given enough time to clear any doubts, which was helpful.' There are several grammatical errors and awkward phrasings present, including 'express with my dissatisfaction', 'It had attended First Aid course', and 'everyone did not get their turn to practically show the things they learnt.' Despite these inaccuracies, communication is rarely impeded, and the punctuation is generally sound.
