Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response successfully covers all parts of the prompt by establishing a clear purpose for writing, detailing the specific issues with the neighbours such as late-night parties and trash in the hallway, and outlining the desired outcomes like issuing a notice and a penalty. The tone is appropriately formal and consistent with a complaint letter to building management. The student presents a clear position throughout and extends ideas logically, for example, explaining how the lack of sleep impacts daily work productivity. While a few points could be expanded further, the overall fulfillment of the task easily justifies this solid level.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter maintains a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. The response is divided into sensible paragraphs, starting with an appropriate salutation and statement of purpose, moving through specific grievances and prior failed attempts to resolve them, and concluding with a clear call to action and sign-off. Cohesive devices such as 'Consequently', 'Additionally', and 'I, therefore, request you' are used to connect ideas, though occasional mechanical transitions or slight lapses in referencing appear. Overall arrangement is coherent and easy to follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, demonstrating an attempt to incorporate less common items and appropriate formal phrases like 'safety guidelines', 'productivity', and 'formally'. However, there are noticeable lexical inaccuracies, awkward word choices, and spelling or collocation errors throughout the text, such as 'wrting', 'faulty smell' instead of 'foul smell', 'panality' instead of 'penalty', and 'curb' instead of 'situation'. These errors do not completely impede communication, but they restrict the lexical score due to a lack of precise control.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some control over structure. However, the text contains frequent grammatical errors and punctuation slips, such as unnecessary commas ('Because of that , I could not'), tense errors ('living in the this building from last 20 years'), article misuse ('the number 306', 'the this building'), and plural-possessive errors ('My neighbours' do'). While the meaning remains generally clear, these persistent errors prevent the writing from achieving a higher band.
