IELTS Writing Task 1 question
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing this letter to inform you that I noticed a large amount of garbage near the countryside area which needs to be clean on an immediate basis.
Most of the people from my neighbourhood including me regularly visit the countrisde area for morning and evening walks. The area is paramount because it provides a peaceful environment and a tranquil atmosphere. Moreover, the area not only allow us to do physical exercise and meditation but also helps to connect with nature.
Recently, there is a lot harmful substances which are dumped over in that area. Owing to hazardous substances, our health is deteriorating continously as we are not able to breathe properly due to punget smell during our activities. Moreover, this litter is also breading mosquitoes that can cause Dengue fever. My suggestion is to send a team to clean this garbage and to install dustbin so that people can utilise those to leave their leftovers. In addition, please disinfect the area so that it kills the disease causing insects.
I would request you to please look into this matter on urgent basis.
Yours faithfully,
Craig

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
The response successfully covers all parts of the task with a clear purpose and tone suitable for a formal complaint letter. You clearly state the problem regarding the garbage in the countryside and provide actionable suggestions, such as sending a cleaning team, installing dustbins, and disinfecting the area. Your ideas are well-supported and extended, particularly in explaining why the area is important to the neighbourhood and describing the health hazards caused by the litter. While the tone is consistently appropriate and the message is fully conveyed, some points are slightly more developed than others, matching the requirement of addressing all parts while keeping the focus clear throughout.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression from the statement of the problem to its background, the specific hazards, and finally the concluding request. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, the value of the location, the specific issues, and the closing demand. You make use of cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Owing to', and 'In addition' to link your ideas together. However, cohesion occasionally feels slightly mechanical or formulaic, and referencing could be smoother in places, which places the response comfortably in the middle band for this criterion.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
An adequate range of vocabulary is deployed to complete the task effectively, including functional phrases like 'peaceful environment', 'tranquil atmosphere', and 'hazardous substances'. You attempt less common vocabulary such as 'deteriorating', 'pungent', and 'disinfect', though there are some spelling and word-choice errors that do not impede communication, such as 'countrisde', 'punget', and 'breading' instead of 'breeding'. These slips reflect a standard vocabulary profile where attempts at sophisticated terms are accompanied by occasional inaccuracies.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The writing demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures like 'I am writing this letter to inform you that...' and 'Moreover, the area not only allow us to do... but also helps...'. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation present throughout the text, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('the area not only allow'), missing articles ('need to be clean', 'install dustbin'), and a preposition choice error ('on urgent basis'). However, these errors rarely impede communication and the meaning remains clear, which is characteristic of this grammatical level.
