IELTS Writing Task 1 question
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing this letter to draw your attention to a large amount of garbage near the countryside area that needs to be cleaned immediately.
Most of the people from my neighbourhood, including myself, regularly visit the countryside area for morning and evening walks. The area is invaluable to our community because it provides a peaceful environment and a tranquil atmosphere. Moreover, the area not only allows us to do physical exercise and meditation but also helps to connect with nature.
Recently, there is a lot of harmful substances that are dumped in that area. Owing to hazardous substances, our health is deteriorating continuously as we are not able to breathe properly due to pungent smell during our activities. Moreover, this litter is also breeding mosquitoes that can cause dengue fever. My suggestion is to send a team to clean this garbage and to install dustbins so that people dispose of their waste effectively. In addition, please disinfect the area so that it kills the disease-causing insects.
I would request you to please look into this matter on urgent basis.
Yours faithfully,
Craig

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
The response successfully covers all parts of the task by clearly stating the purpose of the letter, describing the problem of garbage in the countryside area, and offering practical solutions. The tone is appropriate for a formal complaint or request to local authorities. The ideas are extended and well-supported, such as explaining the impact of the hazardous substances on health and the risk of mosquitoes. For example, the suggestion to send a team, install dustbins, and disinfect the area demonstrates a clear plan of action. While the ideas are well-developed, a slightly deeper elaboration on the exact location of the dumping site could push the response into even higher territory, but it firmly satisfies the requirements for a well-rounded and clear purpose.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter maintains a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. The response is divided into logical paragraphs, beginning with an appropriate salutation, moving into the background of the area and the specific problem, and concluding with clear requests and a formal sign-off. Cohesive devices are used flexibly and appropriately, with connectors such as 'Moreover', 'Recently', and 'In addition' guiding the reader smoothly through the writer's arguments and suggestions. Referencing is clear, and information flows naturally from the introduction of the issue to the health concerns and finally to the proposed solutions, resulting in a cohesive and easy-to-follow piece of writing.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
The writer demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary with some flexibility and precision, using less common items with an awareness of style appropriate for a formal letter. Phrases like 'invaluable to our community', 'tranquil atmosphere', and 'disease-causing insects' show a good command of lexical resource. There are occasional lexical lapses, such as writing 'near the countryside area' instead of 'in the countryside', and 'on urgent basis' instead of 'on an urgent basis', but these errors do not impede communication. The vocabulary is adequate for the task and attempts less common expressions successfully, showing partial mastery of more sophisticated phrasing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0
The response features a good variety of complex structures alongside simple sentences, producing frequent error-free sentences. The writer displays good control of grammar and punctuation, successfully employing relative clauses ('that are dumped in that area') and conditional or result clauses ('so that people dispose of their waste effectively'). There are a few persistent minor errors, such as the subject-verb agreement slip in 'Recently, there is a lot of harmful substances', where 'are' should follow 'substances', and missing articles in places. However, the overall sentence structures remain varied and punctuation is handled well throughout the formal letter.
