IELTS Writing Task 1 question

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Respected Sir/Madam,

I hope this letter finds you in the best of your health and spirits.I am writing this letter in response to a special decision taken by your department for the closure of the playground in our community.

Frst of all, I would like to draw your attention to the importance of this playground for our community. As you know that life has become so fast paced and monotonous that people rarely get time to go out and hang out with thier friends and neighbiurs in their community grounds, however, they try to do so whenever they get a chance or get some free time. Having said that these playgrounds are crucial for the physical and mental developnent of the kids living in the community.

Unfortunately, the community council has decided to close the ground and convert it into a proper gym. Although, the gyms are also crucial for a healthy community but an open air space where kids and adults can spend their pastime are extremely crucial.

I,therofore, on behalf of my community members request you to look upon you decision and pay heed to our request not to close the park .

I shall be very grateful

Yours faithfully,

XYZ

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your letter successfully addresses all parts of the task, maintaining an appropriate semi-formal tone and purpose from the beginning to the end. You clearly state the reason for writing, which is to protest against the closure of the community playground, and you present your arguments on behalf of the residents. While the main ideas are relevant and generally well-presented, some parts are slightly under-developed. For instance, your point about the importance of physical and mental development for children is raised, but it could have been extended with a specific example of how the playground serves this purpose. To move fully into the higher band, you need to ensure that every main idea is thoroughly supported and explored with extended reasoning and finer details, while maintaining a clear and consistent point of view throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

Your response demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear beginning and ending, successfully following standard letter-writing conventions. You use paragraphing to separate your introduction, body points, and conclusion. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical and referencing is not always completely clear. For example, sentences in the second paragraph are heavily linked with long run-on structures using commas, such as '...community grounds, however, they try to do so...', which affects the natural flow of ideas. To achieve a higher band, you should use cohesive devices more flexibly and accurately, avoiding over-used connectors, and ensure that referencing within and between sentences is handled smoothly without creating overly dense or tangled clauses.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

Your vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing you to communicate your message about the community playground effectively. You attempt some less common items such as 'monotonous', 'fast paced', and 'crucial'. However, there are noticeable spelling errors and word choice slips throughout the text, such as 'Frst' instead of First, 'thier' instead of their, 'neighbiurs' instead of neighbours, 'developnent' instead of development, and 'therofore' instead of therefore. These inaccuracies show a limited control over spelling and word forms. To reach the next level, you need to use a wider range of vocabulary with greater precision, improve your spelling accuracy, and demonstrate a better awareness of natural word collocations and stylistic appropriateness.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting structures such as conditional and dependent clauses to express your arguments. There are, however, some errors in grammar and punctuation that appear across the text. For instance, you write 'As you know that life has become', where the extra 'that' is unnecessary, and 'look upon you decision', where the preposition and pronoun are inaccurate ('your' instead of 'you'). Punctuation also needs better control, particularly with comma splices in longer sentences. These errors rarely impede overall communication, placing your control of grammar firmly at this level. To move higher, you need to produce more frequent error-free sentences while maintaining a wide variety of complex structures with accurate punctuation and prepositional patterns.
