IELTS Writing Task 1 question
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to bring to your attention a serious issue about the growing accumulation of litter in the countryside places nearby my city.
The waste material is dumpped in the open ground which is situated just to the end of the street. All kinds of unwanted materials are thrown at the place. For instance, biodegradeble as well as non-biodegradeble waste along with sharp wastes. This is unbearable for all the residents of the town.
Moreover, this has significantly affected the health of individuals. Vulnerable people such as older adults with/without morbidities, pregnant women and children, as well as young adults are facing certain difficulties by the waste gathered at the place. In addition, immunosuppressive patients are getting infected by the vector-borne diseases.
Hence, on behalf of all the people of the town, I request you to please develop an accurate waste management system, like sending waste collection trucks every three days to collect the waste, also provide proper dustbins so that the residents can bifurcate the waste and it can be more manageable.
Yours faithfully,
Anushka Parmar

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
The letter clearly explains the problem—litter is being dumped in an open area near the town—and describes its effects on residents’ health. It also makes a specific request for action, including collection trucks every three days and bins for separating waste, so the purpose is clear and the main points are supported. The formal opening and closing are appropriate. Some claims, such as the list of vulnerable groups and the reference to vector-borne infections, are broad and would be more convincing with a brief, concrete example or explanation. The location could also be described more precisely. Overall, the response addresses the task effectively, with clear ideas, though some details are generalised rather than fully developed.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter follows a clear progression: it introduces the litter problem, explains its health effects, and then requests practical solutions. Paragraphing supports this sequence, and linking expressions such as “Moreover,” “In addition,” and “Hence” help show how the points relate. The reader can follow the argument throughout. At times, however, the connections feel somewhat formulaic, and the final paragraph combines the request, collection schedule, and bin proposal in one long sentence. Separating the proposed actions and making their relationship explicit would improve flow. The transition from the general health impact to the specific claim about infections could also be smoother. Cohesion is generally effective, with some room for more flexible linking and sentence organisation.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
The response uses a suitable range of vocabulary for a formal complaint, including “accumulation of litter,” “waste management system,” “vulnerable people,” and “vector-borne diseases.” These choices communicate the issue clearly and show attempts to use more precise, less common language. However, several word-choice, collocation, and spelling problems reduce naturalness: “countryside places nearby my city,” “open ground,” “sharp wastes,” and “bifurcate the waste” are not idiomatic in this context. There are also spelling errors in “dumpped,” “biodegradeble,” and “non-biodegradeble.” Prefer familiar, accurate expressions such as “nearby rural areas,” “open land,” “sharp objects,” and “separate the waste.” The range is adequate, but more accurate collocations and spelling would make it more fluent and precise.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including the relative clause in “the open ground which is situated…” and the sentence beginning “Vulnerable people such as…”. The overall meaning remains clear, and the formal letter structure is controlled. Some grammatical issues remain, particularly in sentence construction and punctuation. “For instance, biodegradeble as well as non-biodegradeble waste along with sharp wastes” is a fragment rather than a complete sentence. The final request is also overloaded: “I request you to please develop… like sending… also provide…” joins several actions without a clear grammatical structure. The phrase “older adults with/without morbidities” is awkwardly constructed. Use complete sentences and divide the proposed actions into separate clauses or sentences to improve accuracy and control.
