Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to express my deep concern about the growing amount of litter along the Mill Creek Trail and the surrounding rural paths.
I walk Mill Creek Trail every morning to enjoy the quiet nature, fresh air, and the chance to clear my mind away from the busy city. Also, I enjoy the sunrise view with my friend as well as explore more about fields near by this area.
However, this peaceful landscape is slowly turning into dumping ground. On my recent walks, I have seen an alarming amount of rubbish left behind, including plastic water bottles, crisp packest, aluminum soda canes, and takeway coffee cups. Not only does this ruin the natural beauty of the area, it also poses a serious hazard to loacl wildlife.
To fix this problem, I suggest the local council places more rubbish bins at the main trail entrance and puts clear signs about taking waste home. Also, organize awareness campaign on weekends for public and aware about the environment.
I hope you will publish my letter to help inspire our community to protect the countryside we all cherish.
Yours faithfully,
Jagjit Kaur.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
The letter addresses all three required points and maintains a clear, appropriate purpose throughout. You explain why you walk Mill Creek Trail—“quiet nature, fresh air” and the chance to clear your mind—and give specific examples of litter, including bottles, cans and takeaway cups. Your suggestions of adding bins and displaying signs are relevant and practical, while the request to publish the letter suits the newspaper audience. The wildlife hazard also helps explain why the issue matters. To make the ideas more fully developed, explain how the proposed weekend awareness campaign would work or who would organise it; at present, that suggestion is less clear than the others. Overall, the task is covered effectively, with only some scope to extend the proposed solutions.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter has a clear progression: purpose, enjoyment of the walks, description of the problem, proposed action and a closing appeal. Paragraphing supports this sequence, and transitions such as “However” and “To fix this problem” make the shift between ideas easy to follow. The opening and sign-off also fit the formal newspaper-letter format. Some linking is slightly mechanical, particularly the repeated use of “Also,” and the final solution paragraph combines several actions without clearly connecting them. Grouping the suggestions and explaining their relationship would make the progression smoother. The organisation is consistently clear, but more flexible linking and clearer connections between points would strengthen cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “growing amount of litter,” “natural beauty,” “serious hazard” and “protect the countryside we all cherish.” These choices communicate concern clearly and include some appropriately formal language. However, several spelling and word-choice errors reduce precision: “crisp packest,” “soda canes,” “takeway” and “loacl” should be corrected, and “dumping ground” is a rather strong description for litter on a trail. Some phrasing is also unnatural, such as “explore more about fields” and “aware about the environment.” Aim for accurate collocations and check spelling carefully; this would make your vocabulary more controlled while preserving the useful range already shown.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and more complex structures, and several sentences are clear and well controlled, including “I am writing to express my deep concern…” and “Not only does this ruin the natural beauty of the area, it also poses a serious hazard…”. The inversion after “Not only” shows an attempt at a more varied structure. Some grammatical errors remain, however. In “as well as explore,” the verb form should be parallel with “enjoy,” and “the local council places” needs a modal or a different construction to express a suggestion. “Also, organize awareness campaign…” is a sentence fragment and needs a subject and a correctly formed verb. These errors rarely prevent understanding, but improving verb forms, sentence completeness and article use would bring greater consistency.
