Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir Madam,
Hope you are doing well. I am writing to inform you about there are more litter collecting near countryside walking paths. I really love to walk in countryside walking path near our home at evening. It is good walking path around sun set. There are few native birds and huge variety of flowers along walking path.
Recently I have noticed, there are more litter collecting in this area due to increase of popularity. There are many people coming to see flowers. I have seen plastic bags, empty soft drink bottles and also dog litter around wakking path. It is increasing rapidly due to the increse of people.
I believe it would be better to take an action about this matter. We can arrange few more litter bins arround the walking path. In addition to that, increae the collection rounds of the bins from councile. Also I would suggest if we could add new display notices arounf the walking path that shows not to litter.
Kind regards,
Thilan Senawirathna.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address all three points: you explain that you enjoy the countryside path near your home at sunset, describe plastic bags, drink bottles and dog waste, and propose bins, more frequent collections and notices. These details make the letter relevant and give the reader a clear understanding of the issue. The reasons for enjoying the walk and the litter problem are less fully developed, however: for example, you mention birds and flowers but do not explain what makes the setting especially enjoyable, and the increase in litter is attributed to popularity without much supporting detail. To strengthen the letter, develop these points and make each proposed measure more specific, such as where bins should be placed or what notices could say.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter has a clear overall arrangement: the opening introduces the concern, the next paragraph describes the litter, and the final paragraph offers solutions. This progression helps the reader follow your purpose, and phrases such as “Recently” and “In addition to that” signal relationships between ideas. Some connections are repetitive or mechanical, particularly the repeated explanation that litter is increasing because more people visit. The opening sentence also combines the purpose and the problem awkwardly, which makes the transition less smooth. Use a wider range of natural linking expressions and avoid repeating the same cause; clearer links between each suggested action and its benefit would improve the flow further.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate the main points, including “plastic bags,” “soft drink bottles,” “native birds” and “litter bins.” However, the range is limited and several word-choice, collocation and spelling problems make the letter sound less natural. For example, “litter collecting” is not the usual expression for rubbish accumulating, and “dog litter” is unclear where “dog waste” would be more precise. There are also spelling errors such as “wakking,” “increse” and “councile.” Build accuracy by checking spelling and learning common combinations such as “walking trail,” “rubbish accumulates” and “increase the frequency of collections.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You communicate the main message using a mixture of short statements and some longer structures, including “In addition to that, increase the collection rounds…” However, the range is limited, and some sentence forms are incomplete or inaccurately constructed. “I am writing to inform you about there are more litter…” needs a noun phrase or a clause introduced with “that,” while “Hope you are doing well” omits the subject expected in a formal letter. Articles and prepositions also need attention in phrases such as “in countryside walking path” and “around walking path.” Practise building complete sentences with accurate articles and clause patterns, and check punctuation around introductory phrases.
