Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to bring a serious matter into your kind notice that a beautiful walking area near my home is being littered by other walkers.
This is the Green View Park in the countryside near my town which was once a very beautiful, green and clean area to walk. Since the last 3 years, I have been walking every evening in this park because of the fresh air and peaceful environment but now its condition is very saddening.
Yesterday, when I was walking across the park I noticed some used tissues and chocolate wraps were littered all around the park. Not only this there were some plastic bottles and soft-drink cans were thrown everywhere by other walkers. Therefore, it is very difficult to walk in that area.
I kindly request you to write about this condition in your newspaper and encourage people to keep this beautiful and natural space clean and intact. It may reach to the sanitation department of the area and they can take necessary actions.
I shall be highly to you for this.
Regards,
Chris

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address all three points: you explain that you walk in Green View Park for its “fresh air and peaceful environment,” describe tissues, wrappers, bottles and cans, and ask the newspaper to raise awareness and the sanitation department to act. The purpose and generally polite tone are clear. The description of the litter is specific, but the proposed response is less fully developed: explain what action you want the newspaper or department to take, such as installing bins, adding signs, or arranging regular clean-ups. The opening phrase “bring a serious matter into your kind notice” and the closing “I shall be highly to you for this” also make the letter’s request less clear than the main body. More precise, complete phrasing would strengthen the letter’s effectiveness.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter has a clear overall sequence: you introduce the problem, give background about the park, describe what you saw, and make a request. Paragraphing helps distinguish these stages, and links such as “Since” and “Therefore” guide the reader through the account. Some connections are less smooth or precise, however. “Not only this” does not lead into a balanced construction, and “Therefore” makes the difficulty of walking sound like a direct consequence without explaining how the litter affects the route. The final sentence is also incomplete, so the closing does not connect clearly to your request. Use simpler, accurate transitions and make the final request and thanks complete to achieve more consistently controlled cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “peaceful environment,” “plastic bottles,” “soft-drink cans,” and “sanitation department.” These choices make the setting and problem easy to understand, and “littered” and “intact” show an attempt to use less common language. Some expressions are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “into your kind notice,” “its condition is very saddening,” and “I shall be highly to you.” “Chocolate wraps” is also less natural than “chocolate wrappers.” These choices do not prevent the reader from understanding your main message, but they reduce precision and fluency. Focus on natural collocations and complete expressions, especially in the opening and closing, to make your vocabulary more controlled.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including the relative clause “which was once…” and the time clause beginning “Since…”. Most of the message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors affect accuracy. In “Since the last 3 years, I have been walking,” use “For the last three years”; in “some used tissues and chocolate wraps were littered,” the passive construction is awkward for describing what you saw. The sentence “there were some plastic bottles and soft-drink cans were thrown” incorrectly combines two structures; write either “there were… lying around” or “bottles and cans had been thrown.” The closing “I shall be highly to you” is incomplete. Check clause structure, tense patterns, and sentence completeness while retaining your attempts at complex forms.
