Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear sir,
I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing to express my concern regarding a pile of garbage at country side. I usually walk here and I have noticed that people leave their litter there during walk which is now becoming a major concern for residents of this area.
This was my favourite place to walk because it is quite peaceful and broad, but this issue is making it difficult for me to continue my routine. Area has become so much polluted now that it is causing health problems, also contributing in air and land pollution.I have seen people throwing snack's empty packets and plastic bottles there. In addition, people enjoy ice cream and coffee when walking and there is no dustbin nearby, so they throw them too at road. Situation has now become worse.
I would like to suggest some ideas for solving this matter. Newspaper has access to wide range of audience, so you should post about this problem in daily newspaper, or publish some articles for public awreness. Although, I understand that the situation might be unavoidable, I believe that some improvements could be made through these mesaures.
i would be grateful if you could look into this matter and take the necessary steps to resolve it.
I hope you will resolve this issue as soon as possible.
Yours faiothfully,
Aqsa

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You address all three points: you explain that the countryside is peaceful and spacious, describe discarded snack packets and plastic bottles, and propose newspaper coverage to raise awareness. The purpose of writing to the newspaper is clear, and the concern is relevant throughout. However, some parts are less fully developed than others. The location is described only as “country side” and “here,” so readers do not get a clear picture of the walking area. The proposed response also focuses mainly on publicity; you could make it more practical by suggesting bins, signs, or regular clean-ups, and explain how these might help. The claim that pollution is causing health problems is not supported with a specific example.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The letter has a recognisable structure, moving from the reason for writing to the litter problem, proposed action, and a closing request. Paragraphing helps separate these stages, and linking phrases such as “In addition” and “I would like to suggest” make the progression easy to follow. At times, however, connections are mechanical or unclear. “Although, I understand that the situation might be unavoidable” does not clearly relate to the proposed newspaper coverage, and “this issue” and “the situation” could refer to several points. The two final sentences repeat the request to resolve the issue. Make the links between each problem and solution more explicit, and use the closing to make one concise, specific request.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use a relevant range of vocabulary for the topic, including “litter,” “plastic bottles,” “air and land pollution,” and “public awareness.” These choices make the main concern understandable, and phrases such as “express my concern” suit a formal letter. However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, including “a pile of garbage at country side,” “broad” for a walking area, and “contributing in air and land pollution.” There are also spelling and form errors, such as “awreness,” “mesaures,” and “faiothfully,” which reduce the overall accuracy. Aim for more natural combinations and check spelling carefully; for example, describe the area as “open” or “spacious” and say litter “contributes to pollution.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including “I have noticed that people leave their litter there” and a sentence beginning “Although, I understand…”. The meaning is generally clear, but some grammatical and punctuation errors remain. Articles and sentence structure need attention in “Area has become so much polluted now,” while “there is no dustbin nearby, so they throw them too at road” has an unclear pronoun and an incorrect article/preposition pattern. Several sentences run together because spaces after full stops or commas are missing, as in “pollution.I” and “addition, people.” The opening and closing also need consistent capitalisation. Review articles, prepositions, pronoun reference, and sentence boundaries to make your varied structures more controlled.
