Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing this letter to take your concern towards the rising litter on the countryside road. Morning walk is good for health, and I don't miss a chance to go on a walk daily. It not only makes my body fit, but also integral for the normal functioning of the bones and muscles. I prefer to go towards countryside area near my home as it is surrounded by nature. Moreover, fresh air is is important for proper lungs functioning.

The countryside road near my home is getting busy nowadays due to the increase in number of walkers which is good to see that more people are becoming health conscious, but unfortunately there is one major drawback. People throw litter on the roads such as plastic water bottles, chocolate and energy bar wrappers which are very common to find daily. However, this litter is not only spoiling the beauty of nature, but also causing air and soil pollution.

I request the Municipal Corporation to please adress this issue as soon as possible to retain the nature. They should install dustbins on the entire countryside lane. Moreover, warning signs and cameras should be installed so that no incidents repeat, and in case it does there are serious repercussions for someone who violates tham.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The letter addresses all three points and maintains a clear, appropriate purpose: you explain why you walk and where, identify specific litter, and propose practical action. Details such as the countryside being “surrounded by nature” and the bottles and wrappers make the situation easy to understand. Your suggestions of bins, warning signs and cameras are relevant, although the consequences for offenders are only briefly mentioned and could be explained more clearly. The opening phrase “take your concern towards” also makes your purpose less direct than it could be; state that you are writing to raise concern about the litter. Overall, the task is covered clearly, with some ideas more fully supported than others.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The information is arranged in a clear progression: the first paragraph explains your enjoyment of walking, the second describes the problem, and the final paragraph offers solutions. Linking expressions such as “Moreover,” “but unfortunately” and “However” help show how the ideas relate, and the paragraphs are appropriately focused. At times, though, the connections feel slightly mechanical or the reference is unclear. For example, “in case it does” does not clearly identify whether “it” means an incident or a violation. The long final sentence also combines signs, cameras and penalties in a way that could be separated for clarity. More precise referencing and a little more variety in transitions would make the flow smoother.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “health conscious,” “soil pollution,” “warning signs” and “repercussions.” The examples of “plastic water bottles” and wrappers are specific and help communicate the issue. However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “take your concern towards,” “retain the nature” and “proper lungs functioning.” There are also spelling errors in “adress” and “tham,” which slightly reduce accuracy. These do not prevent the reader from understanding your message, but more natural phrasing and careful proofreading would improve precision. Aim to use familiar expressions accurately rather than forcing formal-sounding combinations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The letter includes a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including the contrast in “which is good to see … but unfortunately” and the purpose clause “so that no incidents repeat.” Most ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors affect accuracy. For example, “Morning walk is good for health” needs more natural article use, and “fresh air is is important” contains a repeated verb. In “in case it does there are serious repercussions,” punctuation is needed between the clauses, and the pronoun reference is unclear. The sentence beginning “People throw litter” also has an awkward structure around the examples. Review articles, repeated words, clause boundaries and pronoun references to make your varied sentences more controlled.
