Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing this email to draw your attention to a vey important issue related to the cleanliness in rural areas which increased recently in my city.

Firstly, I am student who enjoy walking in the countryside near my house, particularly beside the river. This habit make me feel realx after a busy day and help me to stay fit.

Secondly, in the recent days I have noticed a very annoying issue which is throwing litter by walkers who also use the countryside way for enjoy walking or running. I see many people there droping things such as bottles of water while they are jogging or walking.

It could be beneficial if you write an awareness post in your newspaper about this issue before it extend to other areas. If you could publish this in your newspaper as soon as possible, I would be grateful.

Yours faithfully,

Ahmed Ali

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You address all three points: you explain that walking beside the river helps you relax and stay fit, describe seeing walkers drop water bottles, and ask the newspaper to publish an awareness message. These details make the letter relevant and its purpose clear. However, the litter description is narrow, and the proposed response is limited to a general newspaper post; more specific measures, such as adding bins or signs, would make the suggestions more complete. The opening calls this an “email,” although the task asks for a letter, and the claim that the problem has increased in the city is not supported with detail. Develop the examples and practical suggestions further to address each part more fully.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter has a clear overall arrangement: an opening that states its purpose, paragraphs covering your enjoyment of walking and the litter, and a closing request. The sequence is easy to follow, and “Firstly” and “Secondly” help signal the main points. However, these transitions feel somewhat mechanical, and the final paragraph moves quickly from the problem to a single proposed action. A more natural progression could connect the litter you observe to specific solutions, then explain why the newspaper’s involvement would help. The reference to “this issue” is understandable, though a more precise link to the litter problem would strengthen cohesion. Overall, the organisation is coherent, but links between ideas could be more flexible and explicit.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “cleanliness,” “countryside,” “awareness post,” and “beneficial.” The reader can understand the main message, but several spelling and word-choice errors reduce precision: “vey,” “realx,” and “droping” are noticeable, while “throwing litter” and “countryside way” are not natural collocations in this context. “Bottles of water” is clear, but adding terms such as “plastic bottles,” “food wrappers,” or “litter bins” would let you describe the problem and solutions more specifically. Aim to check spelling and choose natural combinations such as “leave litter” or “walking trail”; this would make your vocabulary more accurate and effective.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple sentences and more complex forms, including the relative clause in “walkers who also use the countryside way” and the conditional request, “If you could publish this…”. Most sentences communicate their meaning, and errors rarely prevent understanding. Some grammatical problems remain: “I am student” needs an article, “who enjoy” should agree with “student,” and “This habit make” needs a singular verb. The phrase “for enjoy walking” also has an incorrect verb pattern, and “before it extend” needs a correctly formed verb. Review articles, subject–verb agreement, and verb forms after prepositions or infinitives. Greater accuracy in these areas would strengthen an otherwise understandable range of sentence structures.
