Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing this letter to complain about the rising litter on the countryside area left by walkers especially near to the famous canopy lane.

Nature in its raw form is the best place for me to choose for the walk. Morning walk is good for health, and in the era of body fitness, it is becoming trend nowadays to complete ten thousand steps daily. I also follow the trend, and never miss a chance to go for a walk daily as it not only makes my body fit, but is also integral for the normal functioning of the bones and muscles. Moreover, the raw nature is the best place to choose for the brisk walk because the fresh and cool air coming from the trees is important for the normal lungs functioning.

The canopy lane on the countryside road is getting busy nowadays due to the increase in number of walkers as this place has a little pond, and a number of benches to sit and relax. Unfortunately, there is one major drawback. People throw litter around the pond during rest such as plastic water bottles, chocolate wrappers and energy bar wrappers which are very common to find daily. However, this litter is not only spoiling the beauty of nature, but also causing water and soil pollution.

I request the Municipal Corporation to please address this issue as soon as possible to retain the nature. They should install dustbins on the entire countryside lane. Moreover, warning signs and cameras should be installed so that no incidents repeat, and in case it does there are serious repercussions for someone who violates them.

Yours faithfully,

Pratibha Sharma

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The letter addresses all three points clearly: you explain your enjoyment of walking in natural surroundings, identify the pond and benches at Canopy Lane, describe specific rubbish, and propose bins, warning signs and cameras. The examples of bottles and wrappers make the problem concrete, while the effects on natural beauty and pollution support your complaint. Your purpose and request remain clear throughout. To develop the ideas further, explain briefly how the proposed measures would work—for example, who would maintain the bins or how signs could encourage walkers to take their rubbish home. The health discussion is relevant, but some detail about fitness and lung function could be shortened to give more space to the practical response.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter has a clear progression: it introduces the complaint, explains why you walk, describes the litter, and ends with proposed action. Paragraphing supports this sequence, and linking expressions such as “Moreover,” “Unfortunately,” and “However” help show relationships between ideas. The final request is easy to identify. At times, however, the connections feel somewhat formulaic, and the second paragraph contains several related health points that could be grouped more tightly. The phrase “during rest” also makes the timing of the litter slightly unclear. More varied transitions and a clearer link between the busy lane, the litter and its consequences would make the progression smoother and cohesion more flexible.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use a suitable range of vocabulary for a formal complaint, including “rising litter,” “water and soil pollution,” “warning signs,” and “serious repercussions.” Specific items such as “plastic water bottles” and “chocolate wrappers” help convey the issue precisely. There are also attempts at less common or descriptive language, such as “raw nature,” though this is not a natural collocation in this context. Phrases including “normal functioning of the bones and muscles” and “normal lungs functioning” are awkward, and “complete ten thousand steps” is less idiomatic than the usual expression. Aim for more natural collocations and concise wording; this would improve precision while retaining the useful range already shown.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The response includes a mix of simple and complex sentences, with subordinate clauses and cause-and-effect structures, as in “as it not only makes my body fit, but is also integral…” and “so that no incidents repeat.” Meaning remains clear throughout. Some grammatical errors and awkward constructions remain, however. For example, “the countryside area” needs a more suitable article or plural construction, and “due to the increase in number of walkers” is missing an article before “number.” In “in case it does there are serious repercussions,” the conditional clause needs clearer punctuation and structure. Review articles, prepositions and punctuation around longer clauses, while continuing to use varied sentence forms.
