Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir,
I am writing this letter regarding the left over litter thrown on the pedestrian side in the countryside close to my home.
I enjoy walking as it keeps me physically fit and I can also get some fresh air while on walking. I prefer to go to the countryside area because there are less houses and more greenery over there.
I have noticed that litter is thrown on the walks in the countryside. People of nearby houses throw their organic waste, plastic, and general waste, which is not an appropriate location for the waste. As a result, pedestrian have to confront the difficulities while commuting and the improper decomposition of waste can spread the various disesases.
There can be different solutions of this problem. Firstly, there should be proper installation of garabage bins so that people do not throw the litter on the walkways. Secondly, educate the local people that the waste they are throwing could be harmful for their own lives.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address all three points: you explain that walking keeps you fit and gives you fresh air, identify the countryside near your home, describe several kinds of waste, and suggest bins and public education. These are relevant and the purpose of writing to the newspaper is clear. The description of the litter and its effects is less fully developed, however: the account of waste from nearby houses is broad, and the consequences are stated rather than illustrated. The proposed actions are also brief; for example, you could explain who should install or maintain bins, or how residents might be informed. This covers the task well overall, with some points developed more fully than others; adding specific detail and support would make the response more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter has a clear overall sequence: purpose, enjoyment of walking, the litter problem, and possible solutions. Paragraphing helps the reader follow these stages, and signposting such as “Firstly” and “Secondly” makes the suggestions easy to identify. The progression is generally logical, though the final paragraph reads more like a short list than a developed proposal, and the link between the litter and its effects could be made more explicit. Some phrasing also makes connections less smooth, as in “As a result, pedestrian have to confront…” A clearer transition from the types of waste to their consequences, followed by a brief explanation of each proposed action, would create more fluent cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use enough vocabulary to communicate the topic, including “organic waste,” “general waste,” “greenery,” and “decomposition.” However, several word choices and collocations are unnatural or imprecise, such as “pedestrian side,” “on walking,” and “confront the difficulties while commuting.” Spelling errors in “difficulities,” “disesases,” and “garabage” also reduce accuracy and polish. The range is adequate for the letter, but repeated general terms such as “waste” and “problem” limit precision. Aim for natural expressions used in this context, and check spelling carefully; more precise wording would help the reader picture the litter and understand its impact without changing your meaning.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including the reason clause in “as it keeps me physically fit” and the result clause beginning “As a result.” Most meaning remains clear, but some grammatical errors are present. For example, “there are less houses” needs a plural count noun form, and “pedestrian have” has a subject–verb agreement error. The phrase “while on walking” also has an awkward grammatical construction, while “the various diseases” would need a more suitable article or plural construction. Continue using complex sentences, but check agreement, articles, and sentence patterns during revision. Greater consistency in these areas would make the letter more accurate.
