You enjoy walking in the countryside near your home. However, you are noticing that there is more and more litter left there by other walkers.
Write a letter to your local newspaper. In your letter
say why you enjoy walking and where
describe the litter you have seen on your walks
suggest what might be done about the problem
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir,
I am writing this letter to inform you about the people who are throwing litter on our roads and the amount of litter is increasing day by day.
I have a habit of walking on alternative days in the countryside near my home. There's a park on the back side of our house and it has so many beautiful plants and flowers which makes my walk even more peaceful. I really enjoy walking there because of the atmosphere and greenery.
One thing which irritates me is that during my walk I can see a lot of people coming with their families and they throw their empty water bottles on the roads instead of the dustbins which is not good and it really affects our overall environment.
I really want to suggest you that please try to increase the dustbins in the park and also on the roads. Try to write down the instructions on the board in the park to solve the problem. Make sure to take strict action against someone who doesn't follow the rules.
I really hope that you would appreciate my opinion and look forward to my concern.
Regards,

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You address all three points: you explain that you walk in the countryside near your home and enjoy its greenery, describe discarded water bottles, and suggest adding bins, displaying instructions, and enforcing rules. The purpose of writing to the newspaper is clear. However, some points are less fully developed than others. The litter description focuses only on bottles and gives little detail about where or how widespread the problem is, while the proposed “strict action” is not explained. The opening also refers to litter on “our roads,” although the task concerns countryside walking areas. To strengthen the response, give a more specific picture of the litter and explain how your suggestions could encourage walkers to dispose of it properly.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The letter has a clear overall arrangement: an opening statement, separate paragraphs about your walks and the litter, and a paragraph of proposed solutions. This makes the main points easy to locate. Some linking is effective, such as “One thing which irritates me” to introduce the problem and “also” to add another suggestion. However, connections between ideas can feel mechanical, with repeated use of “and” and “also,” and the final sentence, “look forward to my concern,” does not clearly connect to the purpose of the letter. Use more precise transitions and a conventional closing that refers to the newspaper considering or publishing your concern. This would make the progression smoother and the letter’s ending clearer.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use enough vocabulary to communicate the topic, including “countryside,” “greenery,” “empty water bottles,” and “dustbins.” These choices make the setting and the problem understandable. However, several expressions are imprecise or unnatural for a formal letter: “alternative days” is unclear, “back side of our house” is awkward, and “write down the instructions on the board” is not the most natural way to describe displaying a notice. “Overall environment” is also broad when you mean the local surroundings. Aim for more precise collocations and a consistently polite, formal register. For example, describe walking “every other day,” a park “behind my house,” and signs that “remind visitors to use the bins.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and more complex sentences, including the relative clause in “plants and flowers which makes my walk even more peaceful” and the conditional idea in “someone who doesn't follow the rules.” Most of the message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors occur. In the relative clause, the plural subject “plants and flowers” requires “make,” not “makes.” The sentence beginning “I really want to suggest you that” has an incomplete grammatical pattern; use “I would like to suggest that you…” The long sentence about families and bottles would also be clearer if divided or structured more carefully. Check subject–verb agreement and the patterns used after verbs such as “suggest” to improve accuracy.
