Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir/Madam,
I am writing to express my concern about the increasing amount of litter in the countryside near my home.
I really enjoy walking in the contryside because it is beuatiful and peaceful. I usually walk along the paths near the local river, where i can enjoy the fresh air and the beautiful scenery around river. Walking also helps me relax after bucy day at work.
However, recently,i noticed that along the paths including side of the river are many garbage scattered in the ground such as plastic bottles, plastic bag and even the left over food.I have also seen some people throw their garbage directly to the ground, that kind of attitude makes my hearth hurt, because, supposedly, people must take care the nature and be responsable citizen.because, aside from the area may look dirty,it also may harm the wildlife and pollute the water.
I believe that local goverments can do actions and solve this issue as soon as possible.
Firstly, local authority should put more bins and the area.Secondly, put signage in the area indicating that throwing garbage are stricly prohibited and must find the people responsible for unlawful act. Finally, local council should organise regular cleaning activities.
i hope you publish this letter to raise awareness of this problem and encourage people to keep our country side clean.
Yours Faithfully,
concern resident

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The letter addresses all three points and maintains a clear, appropriate purpose: you explain that you enjoy the peaceful countryside and river paths, describe bottles, bags and food waste, and propose bins, signs, enforcement and clean-up activities. The concern is supported with relevant effects on wildlife and water, so the reader can understand why action matters. This is a strong, complete response. To make the ideas more fully developed, explain how one or two measures could work—for example, where bins should be placed or how regular clean-ups could be organised. The suggestion to identify people responsible for littering is relevant, but could be expressed more practically and clearly.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter has a clear overall progression: purpose, enjoyment of the area, description of the problem, proposed solutions and a closing request. Paragraphing helps distinguish these stages, and sequencing words such as “Firstly,” “Secondly” and “Finally” make the recommendations easy to follow. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent organisation and shows some features of stronger progression. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical, particularly in the list of solutions, and punctuation around linking words is inconsistent. The long sentence beginning “I have also seen some people…” combines several points, making the relationship between the behaviour, environmental effects and proposed response less clear. Use shorter sentences and vary transitions to make connections smoother.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use enough vocabulary to communicate the topic, including “scenery,” “wildlife,” “pollute the water” and “raise awareness.” However, the range is limited in places, and noticeable spelling, word-form and collocation errors reduce precision: “contryside,” “beuatiful,” “bucy,” “garbage scattered in the ground” and “responsable citizen.” Repetition of “garbage” and “area” also makes the wording less flexible. These choices do not prevent the reader from understanding the main message, but they make parts of the letter less natural. Build accuracy by checking spelling and learning common combinations such as “litter scattered along the paths” and “take care of nature.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response attempts both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a reason clause (“because it is…”) and a relative clause (“where I can enjoy…”). The main message remains understandable, but errors occur across sentence construction, agreement, articles, prepositions and punctuation. For example, “along the paths including side of the river are many garbage” has an unclear structure and agreement problem; “put more bins and the area” is missing a grammatical link; and “people must take care the nature” needs a different grammatical pattern. Capitalisation of “I” and sentence boundaries are also inconsistent. Practise building accurate sentences around each recommendation, then proofread for articles, verb agreement and punctuation.
