Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Madam or Sir,
I am writing this letter to bring your attention regarding litter on the walking area of countryside and I will suggest some solutions to mitigate this problem.
I am residence of maple street. I go for walk near north countryside area. I love walking there as the environment is peace an calm. Apart from this, that is very beautiful place with lot of side trees. Yesterday, I noticed more and more litter left there by walkers. There were candy wraps, cardboard boxes and many other things. As we know that, litter can cause various diseases.
I think that city can orgnize seminars to aware the people about diseases that can be caused by litter. Moreover, they can also implement the fine for who left litter. I hope my suggestions will help to solve the problem.
I would really appreciate your assistance on this matter.
Yours faithfully,
Seema Rani

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The letter addresses all three required points: you explain that you enjoy the peaceful countryside and its trees, describe litter such as candy wrappers and cardboard boxes, and propose awareness seminars and fines. The purpose is clear from the opening, and the polite closing suits a letter to a newspaper. Some points, however, are less fully developed than others. The location is described only as the “north countryside area,” and the suggestions would be more persuasive if you explained who should organise the seminars or how fines could be enforced. The health concern is relevant, but a specific example of the harm litter causes would strengthen the description and support your proposals. Overall, the task is covered, with room to extend the ideas further.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a coherent overall arrangement: it opens with the purpose, moves to your walking experience and the litter, then presents solutions before closing politely. Paragraphing helps distinguish these stages, and linking phrases such as “Apart from this” and “Moreover” show an effort to connect ideas. Some connections are mechanical or unclear, however. “Apart from this” does not make the relationship between the peaceful setting and its beauty especially precise, while “As we know that” interrupts the flow into the health point. The opening also promises solutions before the letter has established the problem. Use simpler, more exact transitions and make each paragraph develop one clear stage of the message; this would make the progression smoother and the links less noticeable.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use enough vocabulary to communicate the main message, including relevant terms such as “litter,” “cardboard boxes,” “diseases,” and “fine.” There are also attempts at more specific description, such as “peace an calm” and “side trees,” but several choices or forms are inaccurate or unnatural. “Bring your attention regarding” is not the usual collocation; “draw your attention to” would be more natural. “I am residence” and “to aware the people” also show difficulty selecting the correct word form, while “orgnize” contains a spelling error. These issues do not prevent the reader from understanding the letter, but they limit precision and naturalness. Build accuracy with common collocations and check spelling and word forms during revision.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The letter includes mostly straightforward sentence patterns and some attempts to connect ideas, for example, “I love walking there as the environment is peace an calm” and “I think that city can orgnize seminars.” The meaning is generally understandable, but some grammatical errors remain. In “I am residence of maple street,” the sentence needs a suitable noun phrase and article; “the environment is peace” also uses the wrong grammatical form after “is.” The clause “As we know that” has an unnecessary conjunction, and “for who left litter” does not form a correct relative clause. Capitalisation and punctuation also need attention, including “maple street” and the comma after “that.” Practise accurate sentence patterns and relative clauses while retaining the clear, simple structures you already use.
