Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to express my deep concern regarding the garbage left by the walkers in countryside area near my house.

I really enjoy walk in my rural area due to the peaceful, and exquisitely beautiful colours of trees in my favourite fall season. I usually go for an evening walk after having a long day work in order to get rid of sedentary lifestyle which reduces the vulnerability to many diseases.

Last evening, I went for an evening walk. I noticed some water bottles, food wrappers and cans which was thrown bylocal visitors. This wastages should be disposed in garbage bins in order to keep the cleanliness in this area.

This problems could have adverse effects on local society. It would be really appreciated if there are extra bins, signs are located to put the garbage in the bins only. In addition, hefty fines should be imposed on those who litter here and there.

I hope you will take a prompt action towards this problem, and I look forward to immediate action taken by you.

Yours faithfully,

Gaganpreet kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The letter addresses all three points and maintains a clear, appropriate purpose: you explain that you enjoy the peaceful countryside and autumn colours, describe bottles, wrappers and cans, and propose bins, signs and fines. These details make the complaint relevant and give the newspaper practical suggestions. The walking location is identified generally as the rural area near your home, though a more specific place would make this point more vivid. Your proposed measures are clear, but their likely impact is not explained, and the description of the litter could be extended with a little more detail. Overall, the task is fully covered, with some ideas supported more specifically than others; developing those points further would strengthen the letter.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a clear overall progression: you introduce your concern, explain your enjoyment of walking, describe what you observed, and then suggest solutions before closing. Paragraphing helps distinguish these stages, and linking phrases such as “In addition” and “I hope” guide the reader. This gives the response a coherent arrangement. However, some connections are less smooth: “Last evening” repeats the earlier reference to an evening walk, and “This problems” does not clearly connect grammatically to the litter just described. The final request for prompt action is also repeated in “immediate action taken by you.” More varied referencing and less repetition would make cohesion more flexible and natural.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the complaint, including “deep concern,” “sedentary lifestyle,” “vulnerability,” and “hefty fines.” The specific list “water bottles, food wrappers and cans” clearly communicates the problem, while “peaceful” and “beautiful colours” convey why the countryside appeals to you. Some less common choices are not fully natural or precise: “garbage” and “wastages” are awkward in this context, and “keep the cleanliness” is an unnatural collocation. There are also word-form and spacing slips, such as “bylocal,” which affect polish but do not prevent understanding. Aim for more idiomatic combinations and precise forms, especially when describing litter and its disposal.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response attempts both simple and more developed sentence forms, including the purpose clause “in order to get rid of…” and the conditional suggestion “if there are extra bins.” The main message remains understandable, but errors in verb forms, agreement, articles and sentence construction occur across the letter. For example, “I really enjoy walk” needs a gerund, “which was thrown” does not agree with the plural items, and “This problems” has a number mismatch. The sentence “It would be really appreciated if there are extra bins, signs are located…” also combines its ideas inaccurately. Review agreement and clause structure, and proofread articles and punctuation; more consistently accurate sentences would improve control.
