Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to express my huge disappointment regarding the litters in Sirao garden, near our home. I have always been fascinated to the place since it became a tourist spot for its variety of flowers. As such, it has always been part of my routine to walk around the area to smell some fresh air and unwind after a hectic work.

However, just recently I found some litters in the area such as plastics bottles and even left over food scattered. It is quite devastating how some tourist are being irresponsible in maintaing the place. This has to stop and this should be a call to action.

I would like to ask your assistance in reprimanding people to act accordingly. I believe through the use of media, people can be aware about the current status of our beloved town. I hope to hear from you soon and together let's work hand in hand.

Yours faithfully,

Hannah Rosemarie L. Alicaya

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address all three points: you explain that you walk in Sirao Garden to enjoy the flowers, breathe fresh air and unwind; you identify plastic bottles and leftover food; and you ask the newspaper to use the media to raise awareness. The purpose of the letter is clear and the details are relevant. However, the proposed response to the litter is less fully developed than the description: “reprimanding people” and raising awareness do not explain who should act or what practical steps could be taken. For fuller coverage, suggest specific measures such as adding bins, putting up signs, or organising clean-ups, and explain how these could help. The ideas are appropriate, but some need clearer development and support.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a clear overall arrangement: an opening that states your concern and explains your connection to the garden, a paragraph describing the litter, and a final paragraph requesting action. The sequence is easy to follow, and transitions such as “However” help signal the shift from enjoyment to the problem. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent organisation and shows some stronger progression. To make the links more consistently smooth, connect the proposed media campaign directly to the litter problem and add a practical step before the closing request. Some punctuation spacing, such as “However, just,” also interrupts the presentation, while “This has to stop” and “this should be a call to action” repeat a similar point rather than advancing it.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range for the topic, including “fascinated,” “variety of flowers,” “scattered,” “irresponsible,” and “hectic work.” These choices communicate your feelings and describe the setting and problem clearly. You also attempt more expressive language, such as “devastating” and “beloved town,” though some phrasing is not quite natural or precise: “litters” is better expressed as “litter,” and “plastics bottles” should be “plastic bottles.” “Smell some fresh air” is also an awkward collocation; “breathe in the fresh air” would sound more natural. Aim for accurate, natural combinations and avoid repeating “litter” where a clear reference such as “the rubbish” would work.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including “I have always been fascinated…” and the clause beginning “since it became a tourist spot.” Most sentences communicate the intended meaning, and the letter’s purpose remains clear. Some grammatical and punctuation errors remain: “some tourist are” needs plural agreement (“some tourists are”), and “to the place” would be more naturally structured as “by the place.” The sentence “I believe through the use of media, people can be aware…” would be clearer with a more controlled clause structure, such as “I believe the media could help people become aware…”. Check spacing after commas and full stops, and use apostrophes consistently in “let’s.” These revisions would improve accuracy without changing your ideas.
