Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing in regards to the changes that I noticed around the country side. The area is being litered with unpleasant things by other walkers.
Normally, I enjoy strolling around the park, especially during the weekends or when I have a hectic day at work because of its serene and calm environment. I also enjoy the green surroundings and the fresh air around the park.
But recently, I started perceiving foul smell around the vicinity. Not only that, I noticed that Plastic bottles and bags were littered on the floor of the garden, some were even on the seats. At first, it was not much, just one or two biscuits wraps but it later became like a norm. If it was just the biscuits wraps, that will not have been the problem but I noticed that there were wraps of soiled food and some left over fruits on the floor. This made the eveironment not to be conducive and made my whole purpose of coming to the park useless.
I would suggest that the local councils should provide waste bins around the countryside, especially the park, as that is where most of the people stay and unwind. Apart from that, they should also designate days that street cleaners and waste company will sweep and collect the wastes around the park. I believe this will ensure that the place is clean always.
I look forward to receiving a favourable response and seeing a positive change around the park. Thank you.
Yours faithfully,
Ikechukwu Gift

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
The letter addresses all three points clearly: you explain your enjoyment of the park’s “serene and calm environment,” describe bottles, bags, food wrappers and leftover fruit, and propose bins and regular cleaning. The problem and your concern are also clear, and the closing is appropriate for a formal letter to a newspaper. Your suggestions are relevant, though the cleaning proposal could be developed further—for example, by explaining who should organise it or how walkers could be encouraged to use the bins. The description is detailed, but some points repeat the idea that the park has become unpleasant. More focused development of the practical solutions would make the response more fully supported.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter has a clear overall progression: it introduces the concern, explains why you value the park, describes the worsening litter, and then offers solutions. Paragraphing helps the reader follow these stages, and linking expressions such as “Not only that,” “At first,” and “Apart from that” guide the sequence. The contrast introduced by “But recently” is also easy to understand. At times, however, the links feel slightly mechanical, and the long litter paragraph contains several details that could be grouped more tightly. The repeated references to the park and cleanliness also make the flow less flexible. Use a wider range of natural transitions and clearer references when moving between the problem and its effects.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary to describe the setting and the problem, including “serene,” “foul smell,” “plastic bottles,” and “soiled food.” These choices make your concern understandable, and phrases such as “green surroundings” and “fresh air” convey why the park appeals to you. However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, including “being litered,” “perceiving foul smell,” and “biscuits wraps.” There are also spelling errors such as “eveironment,” and “wastes” is not the natural choice for rubbish in this context. Aim for precise, idiomatic phrases such as “covered in litter,” “noticed a foul smell,” and “biscuit wrappers,” and check spelling carefully.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including the conditional structure “If it was just the biscuits wraps, that will not have been the problem” and the sentence beginning “Not only that.” Most of the message remains clear, and you show some ability to connect clauses. Some grammatical errors remain, however. In the conditional sentence, the verb forms do not match; “would not have been” is needed in the result clause. “The local councils should provide” is also less natural in this context than “the local council should provide,” and “days that street cleaners and waste company will sweep” needs a clearer clause structure and article use. Review tense consistency, articles, and sentence construction to make complex ideas more accurate.
