Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to discuss about poorly managed countryside area with a considerable amount of litter, where I often go for walking in the early morning.

I enjoy walking in the park locacted on the outskirts of my town for several reasons. Firstly, I am fascinated by listening the bird chirping while walking. In addtion, the scenery encourages me to improve my overall well-being by becoming more physically active.

I have recently noticed some residents throwing litter, including disposable plastic bags and water bottles on the walkways. Although I made a substantial effort to prevent them from polluting that area, I was not able to do so. I eventually decided to bring the issue to your attention.

I would be grateful if you could investigate this matter and take action immediately. I would like to request you to consider introduding a garbage bin nearby that park. If possible, I would appreciate it if you could assist me in organizing an environmental awareness campaign.

I sincerely hope you will take my request into consideration and take action to resolve this concern at your earliest convenience. I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours faithfully,

Miral Khunt

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You address all three points and maintain a clear, appropriate purpose: you explain why you walk, describe the litter, and request practical action. The details about enjoying birdsong and the scenery, and seeing plastic bags and water bottles on the walkways, make the situation specific. Your suggestions of installing a nearby bin and organising an awareness campaign are relevant, and the formal opening and closing suit a letter to a newspaper. To develop the ideas further, explain more precisely where the litter is concentrated or how it affects the area, and clarify what action you personally took when you say you made a substantial effort to prevent pollution. This would make the supporting details more fully developed rather than somewhat general.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter is organised into clear paragraphs, each with a distinct purpose: introducing the concern, explaining your enjoyment of walking, describing the litter, and proposing solutions. The progression is easy to follow, and linking expressions such as “Firstly,” “In addition,” and “Although” help connect ideas. The formal closing also gives the letter a complete shape. Some transitions are slightly formulaic, and the relationship between your effort to stop the littering and your decision to write could be made clearer. For example, briefly stating what you tried would strengthen that link. You could also reduce repetition in the final paragraph, where “take my request into consideration” and “take action” repeat the same appeal.

Lexical Resource: Band 7.0

You use a sufficient range of vocabulary for the topic and show some flexibility with phrases such as “outskirts of my town,” “overall well-being,” “substantial effort,” and “environmental awareness campaign.” The descriptions of “disposable plastic bags and water bottles” are clear and relevant. There are occasional spelling and collocation errors, including “locacted,” “addtion,” and “introduding,” as well as the unnatural phrase “discuss about.” “Bird chirping” is understandable but could be expressed more naturally. Greater accuracy in these combinations, alongside more precise vocabulary for the litter’s impact, would make your language more fluent and controlled.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0

You use a variety of sentence forms, including complex structures such as “Although I made a substantial effort …, I was not able to do so” and the polite conditional request “I would be grateful if you could investigate this matter.” Many sentences are clear and grammatically controlled, and punctuation generally supports the meaning. A few errors remain in grammatical patterns: “I often go for walking” should be “I often go walking,” and “fascinated by listening the bird chirping” needs a different construction, such as “enjoy listening to the birds chirping.” The request “I would like to request you to consider” is also awkwardly formed. Reviewing verb patterns and prepositions would help you express these ideas more accurately.
