Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am writing this letter to notify you about a very serious littering happening in ABC pathway near the XYZ park's pedestrian pathway in A city. Kindly consider this as a serious environmental issue. A lot of people are taking this day everyday for walking, jogging and also for its scenic views. This is walkable distance from my home and I am someone who walk the trail every day just for the view. There is a beautiful lake and a small wooden cabin there on the other side of the river, and along with that there is a trail that goes long into the woods. People comes even from far away places for hiking here especially durong fall and winter.

I have been spotting a lot of litters recently, predominently plastic covers, bottles and boxes along the pathway and also on the trail track near the wooden cabin. Last day, I saw animal waste thrown in plastic bags, which smells foul.

So kindly request you take actions aganist this. One of the thing you can do is requesting the authorities to put sign boards to stop littering and leaving animal waste on the pathway. Also, suggesting them to locate more garbage pins along the pathway and near the cabin would be amazing.

Hope you will take this issue to the spotlight and would help to resolve the issue as quickly as possible.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three points: you explain that you walk daily for the scenery and describe the lake, cabin and woodland trail; you identify plastic packaging, bottles, boxes and bagged animal waste; and you propose signs and more bins. The purpose of writing to the newspaper is clear, and the concern is relevant throughout. The description of the litter is specific, while the proposed measures are sensible but could be developed further—for example, you could suggest who should install the signs or empty the bins, or mention regular clean-ups. The opening also gives several place labels that are difficult to follow, so a simpler description of the location would make the situation clearer. Overall, the task is covered, though some ideas are less fully explained than others.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter follows a generally logical order: it introduces the problem and your connection to the area, describes what you have seen, and then offers solutions. Paragraphing helps distinguish these stages, and phrases such as “Last day” and “Also” guide the reader through the account. However, some links are mechanical or unclear. For instance, “A lot of people are taking this day everyday” is difficult to connect to the preceding sentence, and “along with that” does not clearly show how the cabin relates to the trail. The final request is appropriate, but the letter would progress more smoothly if each paragraph had a clear focus and the location details were presented more simply. Cohesion is generally present, though referencing and transitions are not consistently controlled.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough vocabulary to communicate the topic, including “scenic views,” “pathway,” “trail,” “plastic covers” and “animal waste.” Some choices are specific and help the reader picture the setting. However, several noticeable word-choice and form errors make parts less natural or precise: “littering happening” would be better expressed as “littering problem,” “garbage pins” should be “rubbish bins,” and “take this issue to the spotlight” is not a natural collocation. There are also spelling errors such as “predominently,” “durong” and “aganist.” These do not prevent understanding, but they reduce accuracy and sometimes make the message harder to follow. Aim for familiar, precise collocations and check spelling before submitting.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more extended sentence forms, including the description beginning “There is a beautiful lake…” and the sentence about people visiting in different seasons. The main message remains understandable, but some errors in agreement, verb forms and sentence construction are evident. For example, “I am someone who walk” needs subject–verb agreement, “People comes” should use a plural verb, and “One of the thing you can do is requesting” has problems with both the plural noun and the structure after “is.” The opening sentence also combines several location details in a way that makes its grammatical relationships unclear. To improve control, use shorter, complete sentences for complex information and check agreement and verb patterns. A wider range is attempted, but accuracy is not yet consistent.
