Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to discuss the poorly managed area where I often go walking in the early morning, which has a considerable amount of litter.
I enjoy walking in the park located on the outskirts of the my town for several reasons. Firstly, I am passionate about walking to stay physically active. In addition, walking along the lakeside trail encourages me to remain consistent and stay productive thoroughout the day.
I have watched some individuals throwing litter, including disposable plastic bags, pieces of glass, and cardboxes. Despite inspiring them to recycle those materials, they did not take any action.
I would be grateful if you could investigate this matter and take appropriate action. I would request that you assist me in organizing a waste awareness campaign to resolve this issue. In particular, I would appreciate it if you could consider installing recycling bins at the appropriate areas of the park.
I sincerely hope you will take my suggestions into consideration. Thank you for providing me the oppoetunity to share my views. I look forward to hearing from you.
Yours faithfully,
Miral Khunt

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You address all three points and maintain a clear, appropriately formal purpose: you explain why you walk, describe the litter, and request action from the newspaper. The details about staying active and walking beside the lake make your reasons relevant, while the examples of plastic bags and broken glass help readers picture the problem. Your proposed awareness campaign and recycling bins are practical suggestions. To develop the response further, explain the impact of the litter—for example, whether it makes the trail unsafe or unpleasant—and make the request to the newspaper more specific, such as asking it to publish an appeal or contact the local council. This would extend and support your ideas more fully rather than leaving some points general.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter has a clear progression: you introduce the issue, explain your connection to the park, describe what you have observed, and then suggest solutions. Separate paragraphs make each part easy to follow, and linking expressions such as “Firstly,” “In addition,” and “In particular” help signal relationships between ideas. The formal opening and closing also suit a letter to a newspaper. Some transitions feel slightly formulaic, and the connection between witnessing people littering and your attempt to encourage recycling could be made more explicit. For smoother cohesion, link the observation and response directly—for instance, explain that you asked the walkers to recycle the items but they ignored the request. Overall, organisation and progression are clear.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You use a suitable range of vocabulary for the topic and formal letter, including “lakeside trail,” “waste awareness campaign,” and “appropriate action.” These choices show some flexibility and help communicate your proposals clearly. There are, however, occasional word-choice, collocation, and spelling inaccuracies that keep the vocabulary from sounding consistently precise. “Cardboxes” is not the usual term for the litter described; “cardboard boxes” would be clearer. “Inspiring them to recycle” does not fit the meaning of asking people to act, and “providing me the opportunity” needs a more natural expression. Check spelling carefully, particularly “throughout” and “opportunity.” More precise, natural phrasing would strengthen an otherwise adequate range.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0
You use a mix of simple and complex structures, and several sentences are controlled well, such as “I would be grateful if you could investigate this matter” and “I would appreciate it if you could consider installing recycling bins.” These conditional forms suit the polite tone. Most of the message remains easy to understand, though a few grammatical slips persist. In “the outskirts of the my town,” remove either “the” or “my”; in “encourages me to remain consistent and stay productive thoroughout the day,” the structure is understandable but could be made more parallel. Also, “Thank you for providing me the opportunity” needs “with” after “me.” Continue checking articles and prepositions while retaining the complex sentence forms you already use effectively.
