Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writting this letter to inform about the increase of garbage in the countryside located near my house. Just like me, a lot of people visit the countryside for walking, jogging , exercising during early mornings or evenings. And ofcourse everybody over here does not like to spend their time in between of garbage.

The Government of our state recently build a countryside, which is at 2 minutes of walking distance from my home, on our request last year. I love spending my day time over there by jogging at 5 am while love sitting on the bench during evening. I see children playing during evening time, birds chirping in the morning and also the fresh air brings positivity during the morning. Since last 5-6 days, I have noticed that during my walk that the people are throwing their waste on to the track , near the bench, in the garden area and everywhere else.

Few people throws the plastic water bottle, while some throw packets of chips and chocolates. Some throw unwrapped chewing gums or stick below the bench. A lot of children play in that garbage area which actually affects their health, while the senior citizens face breathing problem due to the bad smell coming from garbage. I would like to suggest you to keep atleast 6-7 dustbins so that people can throw the garbge in that and also it will be helful to keep the countryside clean. We can also hire a small team which can look after the park during the early hours as well as after closing hours.

It would be very helpful for us if you take action on this and start working on my opinion.Thank you.

Your regards,

Manan

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You address all three points clearly: you explain that you enjoy jogging and sitting on a bench, describe litter such as bottles, snack packets and chewing gum, and propose bins and a team to monitor the area. The details about children’s play and older residents’ breathing problems also show why the issue matters. Your purpose is clear throughout, and the letter is appropriately directed to a newspaper. To strengthen the response further, develop the proposed actions a little more—for example, explain who should arrange the bins or how monitoring could discourage littering. The opening also says the countryside was built at residents’ request, but this background is less relevant than a more direct account of the walking area and its value to the community.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a generally logical progression: it introduces the problem, describes the place and your enjoyment of it, gives examples of litter and its effects, then offers solutions. Paragraphing helps separate these stages, and links such as “Since last 5-6 days” and “while” show attempts to connect ideas. However, some transitions are awkward or unclear, and several details are crowded into long sentences. For example, the sentence beginning “A lot of children play in that garbage area” combines two effects without a clear distinction. The final request and thanks are also joined abruptly. Use clearer sentence boundaries and more natural links between the problem, its consequences and your recommendations to make the progression smoother.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough vocabulary to communicate the topic, including specific items such as “plastic water bottle,” “packets of chips” and “chewing gums,” as well as “senior citizens” and “breathing problem.” This specificity helps the reader picture the issue. However, the range is limited in places, and noticeable spelling and word-choice errors reduce precision: “writting,” “garbge” and “helful” are misspelled, while “in between of garbage” and “unwrapped chewing gums” are unnatural expressions. Repetition of “throw” and “garbage” also makes parts of the description less varied. Build accuracy with common collocations such as “litter the path,” “dispose of waste” and “a strong unpleasant smell,” and proofread spelling carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more extended sentence forms, including a sentence explaining the effects on children and older residents. Meaning is generally recoverable, but errors occur across verb forms, agreement, articles and sentence construction. Examples include “The Government … recently build” instead of a past-tense form, “Few people throws” instead of a plural verb, and “while love sitting” where the subject and verb are incomplete. The opening also contains a sentence fragment beginning “And ofcourse,” and punctuation is inconsistent, particularly where sentences run together. These errors sometimes make the reader pause, even though the main message remains understandable. Practise complete clauses and check subject–verb agreement and tense consistency before submitting.
