Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to bring your attention towards excessive litter left by people at countryside.

I would like to inform you that I go for walk every weekend as I enjoy walking because it helps me clear my mind, and relieve stress, especially after a long day at work. I usually walk in a nearby park because it has fresh air, greenery and a peaceful atmosphere. I also enjoy walking along the Karachi's seaside occasionally, as the cool breeze helps me relax.

Recently, I was disappointed to find that walking pathway was blocked by litter litter scattered on the floor. The garbage had food wrappers, bottle cans and straws. Moreover, I saw alot of people wasted their food and left it their. it attracted the bird and they made worse.

I would appreciate it if you could install more trash cans and put a sign board, so that everyone follows that. If someone does not abide by the rule, I would urge you to penalised them and take strict action for damaging the public property and making the environment unhealthy.

Thankyou for your attention to this matter.

Yours sincerely,

Hammad

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You address all three points in the task and maintain a clear, appropriate purpose: you explain that walking helps you “clear my mind” and “relieve stress,” describe the litter, and propose bins, signs, and penalties. The examples of wrappers, cans, and straws make the complaint specific, while the request for the newspaper’s attention suits the letter’s audience. Your ideas are generally extended with relevant reasons, such as the effect of litter on birds and the environment. To strengthen the response further, explain more precisely where the litter is accumulating and how the newspaper or local authorities could help promote your suggestions. The walking locations are clear, though the seaside detail is less connected to the countryside problem.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a clear overall progression: purpose, personal context, description of the problem, proposed action, and closing. Paragraphing helps distinguish these stages, and linking expressions such as “Recently,” “Moreover,” and “If” guide the reader through the points. This gives the response a coherent structure. Some connections are less smooth, however: the shift from the nearby park to Karachi’s seaside briefly distracts from the countryside issue, and “I saw alot of people wasted their food and left it their” makes the relationship between the litter and people’s actions difficult to follow. The reference in “so that everyone follows that” is also unclear. Use more precise links and references to make the progression consistently easy to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including relevant terms such as “food wrappers,” “peaceful atmosphere,” “trash cans,” and “public property.” There are also attempts at more formal language, for example “I would appreciate it if” and “abide by the rule.” However, several noticeable word-choice, collocation, and spelling problems reduce precision: “bring your attention towards” is unnatural, “bottle cans” is unclear, and “alot,” “Thankyou,” and “their” are incorrectly written in context. “Litter litter” is also an obvious repetition. Choose conventional phrases such as “draw your attention to,” check spelling carefully, and use accurate terms for the items and places you describe.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mixture of simple and complex sentences, including a reason clause with “because” and a conditional sentence beginning “If someone does not abide by the rule.” Most of the message remains understandable, but errors in sentence construction and grammatical forms are noticeable. For example, “I saw alot of people wasted their food” needs a grammatical pattern such as “I saw many people wasting their food” or “I saw that many people had wasted their food.” In “walking pathway was blocked,” an article is needed, and “they made worse” lacks a clear grammatical object. The final request also shifts awkwardly from “I would appreciate it” to “I would urge you.” Practise accurate clause patterns, articles, and complete sentences while retaining your attempts at complex structures.
