Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir,

I am writing this letter to express my concern regarding increasing the amount of litter bt walkers on the countryside near to my place. I would appreciate if you will print this issue in the newspaper to create awareness about maintain the cleaning in this area.

I regularly walk enjoying walkings in these trails near my neighbourhood, particularly in the dence forest area beside the river. This walk give me a relaxation from the hactic lifestyle of the city; I feels like I am in natures lap. I enjoy fresh air, flowers, trees and scenic view, which should be appericiated.

However, I am noticing from last couple of days that the litter is increasing day by day beside the walking paths, like plastic bottels, drink cans, chips packets etc. Moreover, on special ocassion, some people leave their garbage bags near to bench and underneath the trees, which not only effect the beauty of nature, but also have bad impact on wildlife.

To address this problem, I would suggest additional rubbish bins near the paths and the management also charge fines from those who do that kind of activity at public places. To encourage the people, you can also publish the cleaning campaign.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The letter addresses all three points: you explain that you walk in the forest beside the river for relaxation and scenery, describe bottles, cans, snack packets and rubbish bags, and propose bins, fines and a clean-up campaign. Your concern is clear throughout, and the examples make the problem concrete. The suggestions are relevant, although the campaign idea could be explained more fully—for example, who would organise it and how it might encourage walkers to take their rubbish home. The opening also asks the newspaper to raise awareness, which suits the purpose. To strengthen the response further, develop the practical details of your proposed actions and use the requested salutation, “Dear Sir or Madam,” rather than “Dear Sir.”

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The information is arranged in a clear progression: the opening states your concern, the next paragraph explains why you value the walks, the following paragraph describes the litter, and the final paragraph offers solutions. This paragraphing helps the reader follow the letter, and linking expressions such as “However,” “Moreover,” and “To address this problem” signal the relationships between ideas. The sequence is logical and the purpose remains easy to identify. To make the organisation more polished, ensure the closing paragraph develops each recommendation in a distinct, connected way, rather than presenting several suggestions in a compressed list. A conventional sign-off would also complete the letter format.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use vocabulary relevant to the topic, including “scenic view,” “wildlife,” “rubbish bins,” and “cleaning campaign,” and the reader can understand the main message. However, spelling errors and inaccurate word forms are noticeable, as in “dence,” “hactic,” “appericiated,” and “bottels.” Some combinations are also unnatural: “increasing the amount of litter bt walkers” and “maintain the cleaning” do not express the ideas idiomatically. The range is sufficient to describe the setting and problem, but greater accuracy and more natural collocations are needed for clearer, more controlled expression. Proofread spelling and learn common phrases such as “litter left by walkers” and “keep the area clean.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including a relative clause in “which not only effect the beauty of nature, but also have bad impact on wildlife.” This shows an effort to connect ideas, and the overall meaning is generally recoverable. However, errors in verb forms, agreement, articles and sentence construction occur repeatedly: “I would appreciate if you will print,” “This walk give me,” and “I feels like” are examples. The final sentence, “the management also charge fines,” also lacks a correctly formed verb phrase. These patterns make the writing less controlled, even though they do not prevent understanding. Practise accurate present-tense agreement and modal structures, such as “I would appreciate it if you could…” and “the authorities could impose fines.”
