Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear sir,

The intent of this correspondnece is to bring your attention to this matter and seek an appropriate resolution.

Regarding this matter, I would like to highlight a few important observations. To begin with, I am living near the southern part of bracebridge town, near the bracebridge fall. I like to go for 30 minutes of walk during evening time. As this town is quite popular because of it's attractive fall. Furthermore, I like to walk on that trail because I love to interact with a tourist.

I was so dejected when, I've noticed some open garbage bags on center of the road, which have rotten food inside. Regrettably, this situation has resulted in a foul smell and bunch of insect around it. On top of that I also noticed that all garbage can are full with garbage in it and even some are the overflowing as well.

To resolve this matter satisfactorily, I would like you to look for a cleaning schedule properly, and trying to be more focused on hygiene. As because of that litter can produce air pollution and also bring some air-born diseases. That would be immensely beneficial If you arrange one more cleaning session a day near major attraction areas.

I extend my appreciation for your consideration and I anticipate your valued response at your earliest convenience.

Yours Sincerely,

Maitri Bavarva

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address all three points: you explain that you walk for about 30 minutes in the evening near Bracebridge Falls, describe bags of rotten food, overflowing bins, smells and insects, and propose more frequent cleaning. These details make the complaint relevant and give the newspaper a clear sense of the problem. However, the reason you enjoy the walks is only briefly explained, and the proposed response is not fully developed: a cleaning schedule and an extra session are mentioned, but practical measures such as more bins or signs asking walkers to take rubbish home are not explored. The formal opening and closing suit a letter to a newspaper, though the purpose could be stated more directly.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter has a clear overall arrangement, moving from the purpose of writing to your walking habits, the litter, and possible solutions. Paragraphing helps the reader identify these stages, and signposts such as “To begin with,” “Furthermore,” and “On top of that” show how details relate. At times, however, the linking feels mechanical or the relationship between ideas is unclear. For example, “As this town is quite popular because of it’s attractive fall” is left as a fragment, while “To resolve this matter satisfactorily” leads into several loosely connected suggestions. Improve progression by connecting each observation to its consequence and then linking each proposed action directly to the problem it addresses.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range for a formal complaint, including “dejected,” “foul smell,” “overflowing,” and “attraction areas.” These choices help convey the seriousness of the litter and its effects. There are also some inaccurate or unnatural choices that reduce precision, such as “interact with a tourist,” “a bunch of insect,” and “air-born diseases.” Spelling and word-form slips, including “correspondnece” and “garbage can,” also affect the polish of the letter. Aim for natural collocations and precise forms: for instance, describe “meeting tourists,” “a swarm of insects,” and “airborne illnesses.” The meaning remains generally clear, but more consistent accuracy would make the vocabulary more effective.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a relative clause in “bags … which have rotten food inside” and a conditional-style explanation of the effects of litter. Some errors remain in sentence construction, agreement, articles, and punctuation. For example, “As this town is quite popular because of it’s attractive fall” is an incomplete sentence, and “all garbage can are full” has a number-agreement error. The opening “I was so dejected when, I’ve noticed” also combines tenses awkwardly and uses an unnecessary comma. These issues do not usually prevent understanding, but they make parts of the letter less controlled. Check that each sentence has a complete main clause and keep tense choices consistent.
