Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to inform you of ongoing issue of people throwing trash around countryside where I go for a walk everyday in mornings and evenings. I enjoy walking in sub-urban areas due to the presence of lots of plants and greenery there. Especially, shadows of plants which gives cool feeling when I walk around them helps me to get rid of hectic schedule and stress.
However, lately I am noticing a substantial amount of garbage like wrappers, empty cans and other containers in that area where I walk regularly. Individuals are throwing their waste anywhere but not in the garbage bin.
Finally, I would really appreciate if you could guide the public about their reaponsibilities towards environment we are living in. It is everyone's job to keep surroundings clean. As your newspaper is quite famous, it can make a enermous difference in people's mindset through posting about this problem and solutions.
Thank you for your time and consideration. I look forward to hearing from you.
Yours faithfully,
Raj.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The letter addresses all three points: you explain that you walk in the mornings and evenings, describe litter such as “wrappers, empty cans and other containers,” and ask the newspaper to raise public awareness. The purpose and generally formal tone are clear. However, the first point is only partly specific: “sub-urban areas” and “lots of plants and greenery” do not clearly identify the countryside location near your home. The proposed response is also less developed than the description of the problem; you could suggest practical measures, such as installing more bins, arranging clean-up days, or publishing guidance on responsible disposal. These additions would make the ideas more fully explained and useful to readers.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter has a clear overall arrangement: it introduces the concern, describes what you have observed, and then proposes a response. Paragraphing helps distinguish these stages, and the closing is appropriate for a letter to an editor. The sequence is easy to follow, although some linking is mechanical: “However” and “Finally” announce transitions rather than showing the relationship between ideas more naturally. The opening sentence also combines the purpose and location in a way that makes the information slightly difficult to process. To strengthen progression, separate the reason for writing from the description of your walking area, and connect the proposed action directly to the litter problem—for example, explain how newspaper coverage could encourage people to use bins.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range for the topic, including “substantial amount,” “wrappers,” “empty cans,” “garbage bin,” and “responsibilities towards environment.” These choices make the issue understandable, and “substantial” shows an attempt to use more precise vocabulary. Some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, however: “throwing trash around countryside,” “cool feeling,” and “hectic schedule” do not express the ideas as naturally as they could. There are also spelling errors in “reaponsibilities” and “enermous,” and “sub-urban” is not the usual spelling. Aim for accurate, natural phrases such as “littering in the countryside” and “a welcome break from a hectic schedule”; careful proofreading would improve control.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response includes both simple statements and more complex structures, such as “I enjoy walking … due to the presence of lots of plants” and the sentence beginning “As your newspaper is quite famous.” Meaning remains clear overall, but some grammatical errors occur. For example, “ongoing issue” needs an article, “where I go for a walk everyday in mornings and evenings” has problems with article use and phrasing, and “shadows of plants which gives” has a subject–verb agreement error. In “I would really appreciate if,” the clause needs “it” after “appreciate.” Work on articles, agreement, and sentence boundaries, while keeping the varied sentence forms you have attempted.
