Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir,
The reason for my writing is to share information about the rubbish left by walkers in the countryside area near my house, where I usually go for a walk. My name is Himanshi Patel and I live at Lester street apartment.
I love walking in the countryside area as there are many trails which are surrounded by trees. In addition, quality of the air is very good as it provides a fresh feeling. I enjoy walking there a lot because of its natural beauty.
Over the past few weeks, I have observed many different types of garbage spread near the walkway, such as food packets, water bottles and chocolate wrappers.
I think you could help me to solve this problem by publishing this in your newspaper and raise awareness in maintaining natural beauty of the place by not leaving the litter at the countryside area. Moreover, you could also write about placing a few rubbish bins in which people can dispose of their rubbish.
I thank you for your consideration.
Yours sincerely,
Himanshi Patel

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address all three points: you explain that you enjoy the tree-lined trails and fresh air, identify litter such as food packets, bottles and wrappers, and propose newspaper coverage and rubbish bins. These details make the letter relevant and its purpose clear. The description of the litter is specific, but the enjoyment and location could be developed further—for example, identify a particular nearby route or explain what makes it especially appealing. The proposed actions are sensible, though the request to the newspaper could be more direct and the suggestion about raising awareness could explain how walkers might be encouraged to change their behaviour. This covers the task well overall, with some ideas less fully developed than others.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter is organised in a clear sequence: its purpose is introduced, the countryside is described, the litter is reported, and solutions are suggested before the closing. Separate paragraphs help the reader follow these stages, and linking phrases such as “In addition” and “Moreover” make relationships between ideas clear. The progression is logical throughout. To make cohesion more flexible and natural, avoid relying on formulaic transitions and connect related points more smoothly. For instance, the two suggestions in the final paragraph could be presented as a coordinated plan, with a clearer link between newspaper awareness and providing bins. The opening could also move more directly from the purpose to the problem, reducing repetition of the countryside setting.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
Your vocabulary is adequate for the topic and includes useful specific items such as “trails,” “food packets,” “water bottles” and “chocolate wrappers.” Phrases such as “natural beauty” and “raise awareness” also suit a letter to a newspaper. However, some wording is repetitive or imprecise: “countryside area” appears several times, while “share information about” is less direct than language that clearly signals a complaint or concern. “Garbage” and “rubbish” are both understandable, but consistent use would make the style more controlled. There are also a few unnatural collocations, including “fresh feeling” and “maintaining natural beauty.” A broader range of precise environmental vocabulary and more natural combinations would improve flexibility.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, and several sentences are clear and accurate, including “Over the past few weeks, I have observed many different types of garbage spread near the walkway.” The sentence beginning “I love walking…” also combines a reason and supporting detail effectively. Some grammatical errors remain, but they do not prevent understanding. For example, “quality of the air” needs a determiner (“the quality of the air”), and “help me to solve this problem by publishing this in your newspaper and raise awareness” has an inconsistent structure; use “publishing this … and raising awareness” or “publish this … and raise awareness.” Check articles and parallel verb forms, while continuing to vary sentence structures.
