Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to express my deep concern regarding the garbage which is usually thrown by local residents nearby my house in courtryside area.

I usally prefer to go for evening walk on a daily basis. As I have sedentary lifestyle, I prefer to go for a walk which helps me to stay healthy and reduces the vulnerability to many diseases, such as obesity. In this days, in fall season view is exquisitely beautiful because of colourful trees ans plants in this countryside area.

I have seen the heaps of litter while walking from last one week. I think this garbage usally thrown by walkers instead of putting the waste into dustbins. It includes food wrappers, cans and aluminium foils which not only have adverse affects on health but also become a cause of unpleasant odour.

It would be really appreciated if you could take prompt action to keep this place maintained. In order to do, stringent rules and heavy fines should be enforced who throw the garbage here and there. Moreover, there should be sufficient number of garbage bins so that garbages could not overflow from bins.

Thank you for your assistance, and I look forward to getting a positive response.

Yours faithfully,

Gaganpreet Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The letter addresses all three points and maintains a clear, appropriate purpose: you explain that walking helps you stay healthy, describe the countryside’s autumn scenery, identify litter such as wrappers, cans and foil, and propose fines and more bins. These details make the complaint relevant and give the newspaper reader a clear picture of the issue. The suggestions are practical, although they could be developed further—for example, you might mention who should install or maintain the bins, or suggest signs encouraging walkers to take their rubbish home. The description of where you walk is also somewhat general, as “nearby my house” does not identify a particular route or location. Overall, the task is fully addressed, with some ideas more specifically supported than others.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter is organised in a clear sequence: purpose, reasons for walking, description of the litter, proposed action, and a polite closing. Paragraphing helps the reader follow these stages, and linking expressions such as “Moreover” and “In order to” make relationships between ideas clear. The progression is logical throughout. Some connections could be smoother and more precise, however. For instance, “I have seen the heaps of litter while walking from last one week” moves directly into a claim about who leaves it, without explaining how you know this. The repeated references to “this countryside area” and “this place” are understandable but could identify the location more clearly. Overall, cohesion is effective, though a few links and references could be more natural.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “sedentary lifestyle,” “vulnerability,” “adverse effects,” “unpleasant odour,” and “stringent rules.” These choices show an effort to use more formal and less common language, which suits a letter to a newspaper. Some expressions are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “garbage which is usually thrown,” “in fall season,” and “garbages,” and spelling slips such as “usally,” “courtryside,” and “ans” reduce precision. “Adverse effects on health” is also not clearly connected to the litter described. Aim for natural collocations and accurate spelling rather than choosing formal-sounding words where a simpler phrase would be clearer. Your meaning remains understandable, but more consistent control would make the vocabulary more precise.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response includes both simple and more complex sentence forms. For example, “As I have sedentary lifestyle, I prefer to go for a walk which helps me to stay healthy” combines a subordinate clause with a relative clause, while “It includes food wrappers, cans and aluminium foils which…” extends a description. The overall meaning is clear, and errors rarely prevent understanding. Some grammatical inaccuracies remain, including missing articles in “have sedentary lifestyle” and “in fall season,” the awkward time construction “from last one week,” and the agreement and passive construction in “rules and heavy fines should be enforced who throw.” The final suggestion also has an unclear clause: “so that garbages could not overflow from bins.” Review articles, prepositions, agreement, and clause structure, while continuing to use varied sentence patterns.
