Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing this letter to bring your attention towards the countryside just at a walking distance from my house where i usually love walking every evening. However, since last few months a dramatic escalation in the garbage can be seen there which is so annoying.

It is not only a quite place but also full of lush greenery where I like walking, sitting and enjoying the quality time in a lap of nature which act as stress buster for me.

Nevertheless, thesedays a mammoth amount of waste material such as polythene bags, disposable cups, plates, boxes and so on can be observed while walking around this beautiful natural place, destroying the beauty of this place.

In order to tackle this concern, i believe that appropriate dustbins had beeter be placed there, along with spreading awareness among individuals to use them when it comes to throw waste materials or unuseful products.

I would really appreciate your this initiative as it could usher in a sea change in my countryside area.

Yours sincerely,

Manpreet Kaur.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The letter addresses all three points: you explain that you enjoy walking near your home, describe the litter, and propose a response. The reason for walking is developed with details such as the greenery, sitting in nature and finding it a “stress buster.” Your examples of “polythene bags, disposable cups, plates, boxes” make the problem clear, and the suggestion to provide bins and raise awareness is relevant. The purpose and concern remain clear throughout. To strengthen the response further, make the proposed action more specific—for example, identify who should install and maintain the bins, or suggest signs and regular clean-ups. This would extend the solution rather than leaving it at a general recommendation.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The ideas follow a clear progression: you introduce the concern, explain why the countryside matters to you, describe the rubbish, and then suggest a solution. Paragraphing helps the reader distinguish these stages, and transitions such as “However,” “Nevertheless,” and “In order to tackle this concern” make the relationships between ideas clear. The letter also has an appropriate opening and closing. Some linking is a little formulaic, and the final paragraph moves quickly from the suggestion to appreciation. You could improve the flow by connecting the proposed bins and awareness campaign more explicitly, then ending with a direct request for the newspaper to publicise the issue or encourage local action.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use a suitable range of vocabulary for the topic, including “lush greenery,” “disposable cups,” “awareness,” and “tackle this concern.” These choices communicate the issue clearly, and the list of rubbish gives useful detail. There is also an attempt to use less common expressions, such as “dramatic escalation” and “usher in a sea change,” but some phrases are not natural in this context: “a mammoth amount” and “in a lap of nature” sound awkward, while “unuseful products” is imprecise. “Quite place” also appears to be an incorrect word choice for “quiet place.” Aim for accurate, natural collocations rather than adding several elaborate expressions; this would make the vocabulary more precise and controlled.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The letter includes both simple and more complex sentence forms, such as the contrast introduced by “However” and the clause beginning “where I like walking.” Meaning is generally clear, and the paragraphs are readable. Some grammatical errors remain, however. In “since last few months,” the article and time expression need correction; “which act as stress buster” has agreement and article problems; and “dustbins had beeter be placed” contains an incorrect verb form. Capitalisation is also inconsistent, with “i” used in lower case. Review articles, subject–verb agreement, and modal or passive constructions, then proofread for sentence-level accuracy. More reliable control of these forms would make the varied structures easier to follow.
