Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to inform you about the disposed garbage in the countryside near my home. I noticed a increase in waste, as I pass by the same route for a walk in the evenings.

I am fond of walking as I am a health conscious person, and want to keep myself fit. Mostly, I go to a park, located nearby my home for walking because I can interac with lots of people of various ages, which lightens up my mood. In addition to that, the environment is peaceful and pleasant.

Since last few days, I have been noticing that a lot of wastage is collected on the sidepaths, which is leading to air pollution and dirty surroundings. Due to which, some elders are seriously ill. There are few dustbins in a park; however people are spreading the waste all over. It smells horrible.

I would appreciate it if you could take an immediate action and send the municipality workers to take away all the garbage. Furthermore, I feel law should be enforced or there should be penalty for throwing garbage. I hope you will find a better solution. Thank you for your time and consideration.

Yours faithfully,

Yasha

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three points: you explain that walking helps you stay fit, identify a nearby park as your usual route, describe litter on the paths, and propose municipal clean-up and penalties. The letter is relevant and its purpose is clear. The description of the rubbish is less specific than the other parts: “a lot of wastage” and “all the garbage” do not tell the reader what kinds of litter you have seen. The claim that the waste is making elders seriously ill is also not explained or supported. To strengthen the response, give concrete examples of litter and briefly explain how your proposed measures could prevent walkers from leaving more behind. The formal opening and closing suit a letter to a newspaper.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall arrangement: it introduces the concern, explains your enjoyment of walking, describes the problem, and ends with suggestions. Paragraphing helps the reader follow these stages, and links such as “In addition to that” and “Furthermore” make relationships between ideas visible. Some connections are less smooth or precise, however. “Due to which” begins a fragment rather than linking the health claim grammatically to the previous sentence, and “I hope you will find a better solution” is vague after the specific suggestions. The repeated references to “waste” and “garbage” also make the description feel somewhat repetitive. Use complete linking sentences and make the final sentence refer clearly to the action you want the newspaper or municipality to take.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “health conscious,” “peaceful and pleasant,” “air pollution,” and “penalty.” These choices communicate your main points, and you attempt some less common expressions. However, several word choices or collocations are inaccurate or unnatural: “disposed garbage” is awkward, “a lot of wastage is collected” does not naturally describe litter, and “sidepaths” is not the usual term here. There is also a spelling error in “interac.” Choose more precise, natural terms for the rubbish and location, and check spelling before submitting. This would make the description clearer and show more consistent control of vocabulary without changing the letter’s meaning.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex forms, including the reason clause “as I am a health conscious person” and the conditional request “I would appreciate it if you could…”. Most meaning remains clear, but some grammatical errors occur. For example, “I noticed a increase” needs the article “an,” while “Since last few days” needs a different time expression and article. “There are few dustbins” also needs an article or quantifier, and “Due to which, some elders are seriously ill” is an incomplete sentence. Review articles and sentence boundaries, and connect the health claim to a complete sentence. Greater accuracy in these areas, alongside your existing range of structures, would make the letter more polished.
