Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir,
I am writing a letter to you regarding the litter thrown by walkers in our area.
My name is Tina. I am currently living in a modern colony. As I am health lover person. I love to go for morning and evening walk near by lake which is surrounded by different trees and flowers. I used to feel fresh air and enjoyed a pleasent enviournment. Now, the scenario has completely changed.
In addition, when I walked yesterday, I saw some people are throwing garbages over there. It smells like a dumping area. Although, I tried to collect some of the liter, but I am unable to clean it properly.
I would like to suggest you if you could take some serious steps to get rid of this problem Because it will cause some health problmes for the residents or you can charge some fine to the people who will throw garbages ,that would be greatly appreciated.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Yours sincerely,
Tina

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address all three points: you explain that you enjoy walking near the lake for the fresh air and scenery, describe litter left by walkers, and propose action such as fines. The purpose is clear from the opening, and the letter has an appropriate closing. The description of the litter is less fully developed: “some people are throwing garbages” and the smell are mentioned, but specific examples of what was left would make the problem more vivid. Your proposed response is relevant, though “take some serious steps” is general; naming practical measures, such as adding bins or signs, would extend the idea. The response covers the task well overall, with some points developed more fully than others.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter follows a sensible overall order: purpose, enjoyment of the walks, the litter problem, suggested action, and a closing. Paragraphing helps distinguish these stages, and phrases such as “In addition” and “I look forward to hearing from you” guide the reader. However, some links are mechanical or awkward. “Although” does not fit smoothly with the sentence about trying to collect litter, and “Because” begins a new clause after a full stop without a clear connection. The shift from “I” to addressing the newspaper directly is understandable but could be managed more consistently. Clearer sentence boundaries and more natural linking would make the progression smoother and less effortful to follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use enough vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including “surrounded by different trees and flowers,” “fresh air,” “dumping area,” and “charge some fine.” These choices convey the setting and the seriousness of the litter problem. However, noticeable word-choice, collocation, and spelling errors reduce precision: “health lover person,” “garbages,” “liter,” “pleasent,” and “enviournment” are not accurate forms for this context. Some expressions are also vague, particularly “serious steps.” Aim to use familiar words accurately before reaching for more elaborate phrasing, and give concrete names for the rubbish you see. This would make the letter clearer and more natural while retaining an appropriate tone for a local newspaper.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, for example, “As I am health lover person” and “Although, I tried to collect some of the liter, but I am unable to clean it properly.” However, these attempts are often faulty, and several sentences are incomplete or awkwardly joined. “As I am…” is a dependent clause presented as a sentence, while “Although” and “but” are used together in the same construction. There are also errors in articles, agreement, and tense, as in “I used to feel fresh air and enjoyed” and “I saw some people are throwing.” Punctuation around the long suggestion sentence also makes its structure difficult to follow. Practise complete clauses and consistent tense choices, then check sentence boundaries.
