Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I'm writing this to inform you about the increase of litter in the countryside Clifton track.
I have lived in the downtown most of my life, and now after my retirement I moved here in the Clifton. We have a very beatiful natural track here in the near countryside, and I alway go there for my morning walk. This track is very close nature and I always see different animals while doing my walk.
Although this track has a very fresh air but, nowadays I see an increase of litter here. It includes tissues, plastic bottles and different types of wrappers.
Whenever I see someone throwing their litter, I confront them to have a bag for this so you can bring this back home, some listen and some don't. I think we should have some sign boards in the track so we can motivate people to use bags for their litter. If possible, having dust bins after every 100 meters will be better as well.
Yours faithfully,
Umer Nazeer

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The letter addresses all three points clearly. You explain that you enjoy morning walks on the countryside track near Clifton, describe the litter as “tissues, plastic bottles and different types of wrappers,” and suggest both signs and regularly spaced bins. Your opening also makes the purpose of writing clear, and the tone is appropriate for a local newspaper. The personal detail about retiring and moving to Clifton helps explain your connection to the area, while your account of confronting people adds relevant support. To make the ideas more fully developed, explain briefly how the newspaper or local authorities could help implement your suggestions, or why the proposed measures would encourage walkers to take responsibility.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The information is arranged in a sensible sequence: purpose, background and enjoyment of the walk, the litter problem, and possible solutions. Paragraph breaks make the main stages easy to follow, and linking expressions such as “Although,” “Whenever,” and “If possible” help connect ideas. This gives the letter a coherent overall progression. Some connections are less smooth, however: “Although this track has a very fresh air but” combines two contrasting structures, and the shift from describing litter to confronting walkers could be linked more explicitly. The final suggestions would also benefit from a clearer distinction between immediate action by walkers and longer-term measures by the local council.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use enough vocabulary to communicate the topic, including “countryside,” “wrappers,” “confront,” and “dust bins.” The examples of litter are specific, and the language is generally understandable. However, the range is limited and several word choices or forms are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “increase of litter,” “in the Clifton,” and “very close nature.” There are also spelling errors in “beatiful” and “alway.” These issues make the expression less precise and fluent, even though the reader can understand your main points. Aim to learn natural collocations for describing places and environmental problems, and check spelling and word forms carefully before submitting.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mixture of simple and more complex sentences, including “Whenever I see someone throwing their litter, I confront them…” and a sentence beginning with “Although.” The main message remains understandable, but errors recur in sentence construction and grammatical forms. For example, “Although this track has a very fresh air but” incorrectly combines “although” with “but,” while “I have lived in the downtown most of my life, and now after my retirement I moved here” has an unclear tense sequence. The sentence about asking people to “have a bag” also shifts from “I” and “them” to “you.” Practise accurate contrast clauses, articles, and consistent pronoun and tense use, then proofread punctuation.
