Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear sir or Madam,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing to express my concern about incresing the numbers of rubish in the countryside ares and suggest some ways to improve the beauty of the rurral area.

First of all, i like to go for a walk in the park which is situated in the centre of the rural area. i like walking there because the envrionment of the park is very calm and it give me chance to get a fresh air.

However, during my last wak, i have seen many litters there such as broken pieces of glass, and plastic bags as well as bottles which helps to attracts different insects that creats unpleasent smells and creates many pollution related problems.

I appreciate if you can provide additional seperate grabage bins for different type of litters and also make sure cleaners proper clean the area on daily basis.

I hope you take strict action to improve the rural area and publish this concren in the newspaper.

Thank you for your time and consideration. I am looking forward to hearing from you.

Your Fairthfully,

Hardeep Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three points: you explain that you enjoy the park’s calm environment, describe glass, plastic bags and bottles, and propose bins and regular cleaning. The concern is clear and relevant to a newspaper letter. The description of why you walk is brief, however, and the effects of the litter are not fully explained; for example, the claim that it attracts insects and causes pollution would benefit from a clearer link to what you have observed. Your proposed actions are useful but could be developed with a specific suggestion, such as placing bins at popular entrances or asking walkers to take rubbish home. This covers the task well overall, while some ideas remain less fully supported.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter has a clear progression: you introduce the concern, explain your enjoyment of the park, describe the litter, and then suggest solutions. Paragraph breaks help distinguish these stages, and transitions such as “First of all” and “However” make the sequence easy to follow. The closing also suits the purpose of writing to a newspaper. Some linking is a little mechanical, and the long sentence beginning “during my last walk” combines the litter, insects, smells and pollution without clearly showing how each idea connects. Separating the observations from their effects would make the progression more natural. Overall, the organisation is clear and the reader can follow your message throughout.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use vocabulary relevant to the topic, including “countryside,” “broken pieces of glass,” “plastic bags,” “pollution-related problems” and “daily basis.” These choices communicate the main concern, but spelling errors and imprecise word combinations are noticeable and sometimes make the letter less polished. Examples include “incresing,” “rubish,” “rurral,” “litters” and “concren.” Some phrases are also unnatural, such as “improve the beauty” and “different type of litters.” Aim to use accurate, natural collocations and check spelling carefully; for instance, refer to “rubbish” as an uncountable noun and describe the area’s “appearance” or “natural beauty.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including a relative clause in “the park which is situated…” and a longer sentence describing the litter and its effects. The main message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “it give me chance” needs subject–verb agreement and an article, while “which helps to attracts” has an incorrect verb pattern and does not agree with the plural list. The sentence about the litter also shifts between “have seen” and present-tense effects without a clear structure. Practise checking agreement, articles, verb forms and sentence boundaries, and divide long sentences when they contain several separate points. More accurate control of these patterns would strengthen the range you are attempting.
