Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I hope this message finds you well. My name is Himani and I am a resident of Lethbridge community. I am writing this letter in order to draw your attention towards a growing issue nearby our countryside.
I regularly visit our countryside park and lake every evening. I enjoy walking in the park there with my children because they can play there without any hesitation and explore our countryside. Furthermore, I admire to see farming animals and their nurturing facilities.
However, I have been noticing that certain people are littering in our countryside park. They visit the park with their family, enjoy fishing and picnic, they eat and drink with their friends but they never use dustbins instead they leave their litter in the place where they sattled. Moreover, I have seen some pet owners not picking their animals' litter and they make the walking path uncomfortable for daily walks.
I believe that we should respect and preserve our countryside beauty and thus it is necessary to take certain actions against litter creators. In my opinion we can draw public attention towards this problem by mentioning an article about this in newspaper with suitable photographs. In addition, it would be more beneficial if the community can implement a penalty for not respecting the cleanliness in the area.
Thank you.
Kind regards,
Himani.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You address all three points and maintain a clear, appropriate purpose for writing to the newspaper. The reasons for walking are specific: you go to the park and lake with your children, and enjoy seeing farm animals. You also describe both general litter and a particular problem with pet waste, then propose newspaper coverage and penalties. These ideas are relevant and sufficiently extended to make the concern clear. To strengthen the letter further, explain how the suggested measures could work—for example, who would enforce penalties or whether more bins and signs could help. The description of the litter itself could also include a concrete example, such as bottles or food packaging, rather than relying mainly on general references to litter.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter has a clear progression: you introduce your concern, explain your enjoyment of the area, describe the problem, and offer solutions. Paragraphing supports this sequence, and linking expressions such as “Furthermore,” “However,” and “In addition” help readers follow the shift between ideas. The overall organisation is effective and the purpose remains clear. Some connections within sentences are less controlled, particularly the long sentence beginning “They visit the park with their family,” where several actions are joined together and the contrast with leaving litter could be separated more clearly. A few transitions, such as “thus,” feel somewhat formal or mechanical. Using a wider variety of natural links and breaking up the crowded sentence would make the flow smoother.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “draw your attention,” “preserve,” “penalty,” and “walking path.” These choices communicate the issue and proposed action clearly, and you attempt some less common expressions. However, several word choices or collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “admire to see,” “farming animals,” “their nurturing facilities,” and “litter creators.” There is also a spelling error in “sattled.” These do not prevent understanding, but they limit precision and naturalness. Prefer familiar, accurate combinations—for example, “enjoy seeing farm animals,” “animal-care facilities,” and “people who litter”—and check spelling carefully. More precise examples of the rubbish would also help make the description vivid.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a reason clause with “because” and a conditional suggestion beginning “if the community can implement a penalty.” Most of the message remains understandable, and the paragraph structure helps clarify meaning. Some grammatical errors remain, particularly in sentence construction and verb patterns. In “They visit the park …, enjoy fishing and picnic, they eat and drink,” independent clauses are joined without suitable punctuation or a conjunction. “I admire to see” also uses an incorrect verb pattern; write “I enjoy seeing” or “I admire seeing.” In “it would be more beneficial if the community can implement,” the conditional form would be more consistent as “could implement.” Review clause boundaries and verb patterns to improve accuracy.
