Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to draw your attention to the increasing amount of garbage near my accommodation that has been thrown by the daily walkers. As a result, the piles of litter have accumulated there.
Actually, my house is located near the farms just near the outskirts of the city with a beautiful view and a peaceful environment. Being tired of a stressful life, I often go for a short walk with my husband there in order to relax. However, it makes me really disappointed to watch people throw their house trash and food leftovers on the walkways. Some people do not even pay attention to getting their pets' trash picked up. Due to all these things, I can no longer enjoy the same clean and fresh ambience.
I want you to publish an artical in your newspaper raising this as an immediate concern as I do not want to see a beautiful and calm place turning into a garbage spot. I would also like you to request some of the responsible authorities who can look into this matter at their earliest convenience.
Thank you for the support in advance.
Yours sincerely,
Tarandeep

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You address the three main points: you explain that you walk near the farms on the city outskirts to relax, describe household rubbish, food leftovers and pet waste, and ask the newspaper to raise the issue and authorities to respond. The purpose of the letter is clear. However, the proposed action is not developed enough: “request some of the responsible authorities” does not specify what they should do, such as install bins, add signs or arrange regular clean-ups. The description of the litter is relevant, but the opening claim about “piles” is not supported with detail. Develop the practical suggestions and make the requested response more specific to strengthen the letter’s coverage.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter has a clear overall sequence: it introduces the problem, explains your connection to the area, describes what you have seen, and ends with a request. Paragraphing helps distinguish these stages, and linking expressions such as “As a result,” “However,” and “Due to all these things” make the relationships between ideas understandable. The progression is generally logical, though some links feel mechanical, particularly the repeated cause-and-effect framing. The opening repeats the idea of litter accumulating in two consecutive sentences, and the final paragraph combines the newspaper request with the appeal to authorities without explaining how these actions relate. Removing repetition and connecting the proposed actions more explicitly would make the organisation more flexible and polished.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “food leftovers,” “walkways,” “peaceful environment,” and “immediate concern.” These choices make the situation clear, and the reader can understand your main points. There are also attempts at more formal or less common expressions, such as “draw your attention” and “at their earliest convenience,” although some combinations are not natural in context. “Garbage” and “trash” are understandable but repeated, while “ambience” is less suitable for describing the cleanliness of a countryside path. There is also a spelling error in “artical.” Aim for more precise, natural collocations and vary the terms for litter; for example, “rubbish” or “discarded packaging” could suit this letter.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including the purpose clause “in order to relax” and the contrast introduced by “However.” Most sentences are understandable, and grammatical errors rarely obstruct the message. Some sentence patterns are less controlled: “my house is located near the farms just near the outskirts” repeats the location structure, and “I want you to publish an article … as I do not want to see” makes the relationship between the request and reason awkward. The phrase “Some people do not even pay attention to getting their pets’ trash picked up” is also cumbersome. Practise building concise clauses and checking how dependent clauses connect to the main idea; this will improve accuracy while preserving your range.
