Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing this letter in order to bring your attention towards the trash that is spread all along the Allison Line. It is one of the most prominent path for walkers and joggers and I usually go for a walk on the same road. I like the environment surrounding the stretch as it is covered with variety of trees and also it has a small playground with some exercising equipments connected to it.

Lately, I have noticed a considerable amount of litter thrown around the path by people. Mostly it is plastic bottles and tissue papers which I assume belongs to other individuals who take a walk or jog.

I request you to publish an article on this matter in your newspaper highlighting the importance of keeping the path clean for other users. I would also like you to mention for people to carry their own bags to throw waste and also for the muncipality to install a couple of garbage bins along the way.

I hope you understand the urgency of this matter and do the necessary.

Yours sincerely,

Rudresh

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You address all three points clearly: you explain that you walk along Allison Line and enjoy its trees and playground, identify plastic bottles and tissue paper, and propose a newspaper article, personal waste bags, and bins. The purpose of writing is clear from the opening, and the suggestions are relevant and practical. The description of the litter is specific, while the reasons for enjoying the route and the impact of the rubbish are less fully developed. For example, you could explain how the litter affects the scenery or other walkers, and give a little more detail about why this particular path is enjoyable. Overall, the letter fulfils the task with a clear purpose and relevant supporting details.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter is organised in a clear sequence: purpose and enjoyment of the route, the litter problem, then proposed solutions and a closing. Paragraphing helps the reader follow these stages, and linking expressions such as “Lately” and “I would also like” make the progression easy to understand. The ideas within each paragraph are generally connected, though some transitions are quite formulaic and the final request combines several actions in one long sentence. You could make the suggestions easier to process by separating the newspaper’s role from the municipality’s role, and use a more explicit link between the litter and the need for action. The overall progression is clear and effective.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

Your vocabulary is adequate for the topic and includes some useful choices, such as “prominent path,” “considerable amount of litter,” and “highlighting the importance.” These help communicate the issue and your proposed response. However, several word choices or collocations are imprecise, including “bring your attention towards,” “tissue papers,” and “exercising equipments.” There is also a spelling error in “muncipality.” These do not prevent understanding, but they limit the naturalness and precision of the letter. Aim for more conventional expressions and check spelling and countable forms; for example, “draw your attention to,” “tissues,” and “exercise equipment” would be more idiomatic.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including the relative clause “which I assume belongs to other individuals” and the reason clause “as it is covered with variety of trees.” Most of the message remains understandable, and the paragraphing and punctuation support the reader. Some grammatical errors remain, however: “one of the most prominent path” needs a plural noun, “which … belongs” has a subject–verb agreement problem, and “covered with variety of trees” is missing an article. The long sentence beginning “I would also like you to mention” also makes the structure less controlled. Review agreement, articles, and sentence boundaries, while continuing to use complex structures.
