Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am writing to express my concern about increasing amount of rubbish in the countryside area through your newspaper.

I have been visiting the countryside area for the past a decade. I visit this area because of its peaceful and relaxing environment that it provides to visitors. I enjoy several physical activities there and also enjoy spending time in the nature.

Recently, I have noticed an excessive amount of waste in a park, which including plastic bottles, takeout food containers and food wrappers. People, especially who visit this park for picnic, they leave their waste behind instead of putting them in the garbage bins. Along with this, garbage is not collected on time because bins are overflowing, which makes the park look unpleasent.

I would appreciate it if appropriate information could be published by the local newspaper agency in order to make people aware of maintaining cleanliness in the park. At the same time, it would also be helpful to request the local council to arrange waste collection weekly or bi-weekly to maintain the natural sustainability for future.

Thank you for your time and consideration. I hope people can change their attitude by reading article in the newspaper.

Yours faithfully,

Soni.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

You address all three points clearly: you explain that you value the countryside for its “peaceful and relaxing environment,” identify litter such as plastic bottles, food containers and wrappers, and propose newspaper awareness and more regular council collections. The letter’s purpose and polite tone are clear throughout, and the examples make the problem concrete. Your suggestions are relevant, although the awareness campaign is expressed generally; specifying a practical action, such as signs or a public reminder about using bins, would make it more fully developed. The location could also be more precise: you refer to “the countryside area” and then “a park,” without identifying where you walk. Overall, the task is well addressed, with some scope to extend the supporting details and make the proposals more specific.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter follows a clear progression from your reason for writing, to your enjoyment of the area, the litter problem, and possible solutions. Separate paragraphs help the reader follow these stages, and linking expressions such as “Recently,” “Along with this,” and “At the same time” connect related points. The sequence within the litter paragraph is especially logical: you list the rubbish, explain who leaves it, and describe the effect of overflowing bins. Some connections are less smooth, however. “Along with this” does not clearly show whether delayed collection is an additional cause or consequence, and the final sentence repeats the hope for change after the proposed actions. More precise referencing and a tighter closing would make the progression feel more consistently controlled.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “excessive amount of waste,” “food wrappers,” “overflowing,” and “maintaining cleanliness.” These choices communicate the issue clearly, and the specific examples of rubbish add useful precision. There are also some awkward or inaccurate collocations and word forms, such as “countryside area,” “local newspaper agency,” and “natural sustainability,” which make parts of the letter sound less natural. The spelling error “unpleasent” is another noticeable slip. To strengthen your range, choose more idiomatic phrases and use them precisely—for example, refer to “the countryside” or “the local newspaper,” and describe protecting the area’s “natural environment.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including the relative clause in “the environment that it provides” and the conditional request, “I would appreciate it if … could be published.” Meaning remains clear, but some grammatical errors occur. Examples include “increasing amount” (missing an article), “for the past a decade” (incorrect time expression), and “which including” (the clause needs a finite verb, such as “which includes”). In “People … they leave,” the subject is repeated, while “putting them in the garbage bins” has unclear agreement with the singular “waste.” These issues do not prevent understanding, but checking articles, clause structure, and pronoun reference would improve accuracy. Continue using complex forms, while ensuring each clause is complete.
