Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir,

I am writing this letter to inform you about the current situation I have been facing in park near my home while walking there. I regularly visit the park in morning around 7:00 am. Recently I have noticed litter around every corner the park left by visitors. Most of the garbage includes plastic bags which are not only harmful for envoirnment but also gives an untidy look to the park. Empty cans and water bottles are also left on the ground. Left over eatables not discraded in proper bins.

I enjoy walking there becuase of the calm envoirnment. The greenery of trees around the park and selection of various flowers along the pavement gives a beautiful view. The thing I like the most is a separate area for visitors who come for a walk and exercise.

Please look into this matter and advertise a notice in your newspaper for the awareness of the public to keep the park clean. People should be encouraged to use dustbins installed in park. And park authorities to develop a team for maintainance of the park. The team should not only clean the park but keep an eye on visitors to maintain clean envoirnment.

Yours sincerely,

Ashley.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You address all three points clearly: you explain that you walk in the park near your home for its calm atmosphere, trees, flowers and exercise area; describe plastic bags, cans, bottles and food waste; and suggest newspaper notices, using bins and park monitoring. These details make the letter relevant and give the reader a clear sense of the problem. Your suggestions are appropriate, although the proposed team’s role could be explained more specifically—for example, how often it would clean the park or what action it could take when visitors litter. The purpose remains clear throughout, and the content is sufficiently extended, though some ideas are stated generally rather than fully supported.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a clear overall structure: you introduce the concern, describe why you value the park, and then offer solutions. Paragraphing helps distinguish these purposes, and the sequence is easy to follow. You also use basic links such as “Recently,” “because,” and “also” to connect information. However, some connections feel abrupt: the description of litter comes before the explanation of why you enjoy walking, and “And park authorities…” begins a new sentence without a clear link to the previous recommendation. The opening also combines several points in one long paragraph. More flexible transitions and clearer links between each proposed action would make the progression smoother and more controlled.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough vocabulary to communicate the topic, including “plastic bags,” “empty cans,” “water bottles,” “greenery,” and “pavement.” Some choices are appropriate to a formal letter, such as “Please look into this matter” and “awareness of the public.” However, noticeable spelling and word-choice errors reduce precision, including “envoirnment,” “becuase,” “discraded,” and “maintainance.” Some phrases are also unnatural or imprecise, such as “selection of various flowers” and “Left over eatables not discraded in proper bins.” Aim to use accurate, natural collocations and check spelling carefully; this would make your meaning more fluent and polished without requiring a much wider range of vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more developed sentence forms, and the main message is generally understandable. For example, “The greenery of trees around the park and selection of various flowers along the pavement gives a beautiful view” attempts a longer descriptive structure, while “People should be encouraged to use dustbins installed in park” uses a passive form. However, errors in sentence construction and agreement recur. “Left over eatables not…” is a fragment without a finite verb, and “The greenery … and selection … gives” has a subject–verb agreement problem. Articles are also missing in phrases such as “in park” and “in morning.” Practise complete sentences, agreement with compound subjects, and article use; these corrections would improve accuracy while preserving your attempts at varied structures.
