Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir,

I hope this letter finds you well. I am a resident of North York and I am writing this letter to address my concern regarding an issue.

We have so many beautifual parks and trails in our neighbourhood;out of all of them, I usually go for a walk in the Humber Submit trail which is right across of my home. The whole trail is magnificant and there is a river that cross the park. Many people come in that park for its beauty and huge space.

when I was walking last week, I saw people left litter in the park. Not only me, my friends also noticed so much garbage in the trail. We believe, there are not enough trash cans in the trail.

Additionally, people are not awear about their actions.Due to this garden has become dirty.

I suggest you to put a notice in your paper and advice people not to throw garbage in the park.Further more, request people to pick-up the litter and use the bin. Can you please request the mayor to put more dustbins in that park?

I really appreciate your help in this situation. I hope to hear from you reagrding this matter as soon as possible.

Yours Sincearly,

Mr. Dinesh Patel.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The letter addresses all three points: you explain that you enjoy the Humber trail for its beauty and river, describe litter and a shortage of bins, and suggest newspaper notices, public action and more bins. The purpose is clear and the suggestions are relevant. The description of the litter, however, remains general: “so much garbage” does not tell readers what kinds of rubbish are being left or where it is concentrated. Your explanation that people may be unaware of their actions is also asserted rather than supported. To develop the response further, give one or two concrete examples of litter and explain how your proposed measures could help. The next level requires more consistently extended and supported ideas.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The message follows a sensible sequence: it introduces your concern, describes the trail and litter, then offers solutions and closes politely. Paragraph breaks help distinguish these stages, and linking phrases such as “Additionally” and “I suggest” make the progression easy to follow. Some connections are less smooth, however. “Not only me, my friends also noticed” is an awkward transition, while “Due to this garden has become dirty” does not clearly connect the cause to the result. The opening also repeats “I am writing this letter” and “regarding an issue” before identifying the concern. Use clearer references and more natural links between observations and recommendations to make cohesion more flexible and less mechanical.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “trail,” “litter,” “garbage,” “trash cans” and “mayor,” so the reader can understand the main concern and proposed action. There are also attempts at more descriptive language, such as “magnificent” and “huge space.” However, the range is limited and some choices or spellings reduce accuracy: “beautifual,” “Submit,” “magnificant,” “awear” and “reagrding” appear to be spelling errors, and “put a notice in your paper” is less natural than “publish a notice.” Repetition of “park,” “trail” and “garbage” also limits flexibility. Build a more precise set of terms for types of rubbish and public measures, and check spelling and collocations carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex forms, including “I hope this letter finds you well” and “Not only me, my friends also noticed…”. The overall meaning remains understandable, but some sentence structures and verb forms are inaccurate. For example, “there is a river that cross the park” needs subject–verb agreement, and “I saw people left litter” needs a suitable verb pattern, such as “I saw people leaving litter.” The sentence “Due to this garden has become dirty” is also incomplete in structure; use “As a result, the area has become dirty.” Capitalisation and punctuation are inconsistent, particularly at sentence beginnings and around spaces after full stops. More accurate control of these patterns would strengthen the range you are already attempting.
