Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing this regarding the littering of waste in the countryside are by walkers.
I have been living in the countryside area of Niagara Falls for about two years and enjoy this peaceful place. I go for morning walk evrery day and really enjoy the peaceful and the scenic view on the village road.
The path itself is mesmerizing, however, littering by fellow walkers has become a real problem in the area. I have noticed an increase in newspaper, food wrappers and empty bottles being left behind on the path.
The municipality regularly cleans up the city streets whereas the countryside remains unnoticed. A regular check would help to keep the outskirts of the city clean as well. Adding more garbage bins and increased fines for littering will also help to reduce the problem.
I would appreciate if the this issue can be taken up and published in your newspaper to create awareness among the resident and authorities.
Yours faithfully,
Ajaypal Singh

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The letter addresses all three points: you explain that you enjoy the peaceful countryside near Niagara Falls and morning walks, identify newspapers, food wrappers and bottles as litter, and propose checks, bins and fines. Your purpose is clear, and the request for the newspaper to raise awareness gives the letter an appropriate practical focus. The description of the litter is specific, while the enjoyment of walking is supported by the peaceful and scenic setting. To develop the ideas further, explain briefly how the litter affects the paths or walkers, and make the proposed checks more precise—for example, who should carry them out or how often. This would make the suggestions more fully supported rather than somewhat general.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter has a clear progression: it introduces the concern, gives background about your walks, describes the litter, and then offers solutions before making a request. Paragraphing supports this sequence, and linking expressions such as “however,” “whereas” and “also” help show contrast and addition. The closing is appropriate for a formal letter. Some connections could be made more smoothly: “The path itself is mesmerizing” shifts abruptly from the description of the litter, and “A regular check” does not specify what is to be checked. Clarifying that reference and linking the scenic setting more directly to the problem would make the progression feel more consistently controlled.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “scenic view,” “food wrappers,” “empty bottles,” “outskirts” and “increased fines.” These choices make the concern and proposed remedies clear, and “mesmerizing” shows an attempt to use less common descriptive language. Some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, however: “littering of waste” is redundant, “countryside area” is repetitive, and “newspaper” would be clearer as “newspapers” when listing discarded items. There are also spelling and word-form slips, including “evrery” and “resident” where a plural is needed. Aim for precise, natural phrases such as “litter left by walkers” and check spelling and number forms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response includes both simple sentences and more complex forms, such as “The municipality regularly cleans up the city streets whereas the countryside remains unnoticed.” Most ideas remain easy to understand, and the letter uses a range of sentence purposes, including a polite request. Some grammatical errors remain: “the countryside are” has incorrect agreement, “I go for morning walk” needs an article, and “I would appreciate if the this issue can be taken up” contains an extra article and an awkward conditional construction. The sentence beginning “I have been living…” also combines a present perfect form with a less natural description of the area. Review articles, agreement and conditional request patterns, then proofread for small errors while retaining your varied sentence structures.
